i have a 7600 that the hi-fi audio seems to stopped working. the norm audio works, but has an annoying hiss.

if you play a tape and set it to hi-fi it just reverts to norm. when recording in hi-fi you get no audio
recording in norm works , but again alot of hiss.

could the audio head be bad?
or is is a possible alignment issue?
does the norm and hi-fi use the same head?

i fixed it!
i figured i would try another cleaning before sending it out to a shop.
i noticed a piece of tape debris stuck between the upper and lower drums.
this model has the Dynamic drum which moves up and down.
the debris must have been impeding that.

i watched 2 full movies (1 in SVHS) and tested recording and all seems well now.

That's awesome that you got it resolved...seems like the simple things tend to cause the biggest headaches.
