Currently using VD 1.10.4 on a 64 Bit Win 10 System to capture video.

Capture WITHOUT any compression seems to work fine but the file sizes are HUGE! I have tried Huff, Lag and Greenvalley inside VD and none of them work. Each throws an error code.

Is there a compressor that works on a Win 10/64 bit system using VD?

(For reasons i cant explain, Vegas 12 Pro wont capture through my firewire. Seems to be a Vegas issue as i capture fine in VD)

Here is my Jackleg setup (go ahead and laugh):

Sony Hi8 CCD-TRV57 for playback. Analog out via RCA into a Sony DCR-TRV38 Digital Camera for the pass through. Out of the TRV38 via Firewire into a brand new SIIG 2-Port FireWire PCIe card.

For DV/Firewire, you should be using WinDV or Scenalyzer. That's because this method will mean a "transfer" of the DV data from the TRV38 as opposed to a re-encode into another codec.

Very sorry about this, @Denicio, I re-read your post and then completely changed my reply. Use WinDV or Scenalyzer.

DV is 13gb per hour.

Your current VD files are "huge" because you are capturing uncompressed video, so you were doing the right thing trying HUFF or LAGS, but a DV "transfer" with WinDV or Scenalyzer is ideal.

I've written Google Drive guides for using WinDV and Scenalyzer.

Thanks for the info and links to tutorials. Nicely laid out!

Audio Recording with DAW's are my expertise. I could bore you for hours on end about mics, consoles, plug ins and compressors. Video i am very much a beginner.

With that said, id like to ask this question. Does either WinDV or Scenalyzer allow you to insert Huff or Lag compression as a way to reduce file size?

No. DV is just another AVI codec, except that the camera creates it, which you then just "copy"/transfer to the computer using WinDV or Scenalyzer. The file size for LAGS is around 24gb per hour and for HUFF, around 40gb per hour, so you won't save any space and you'll end up with a lower quality capture compared to transferring DV from your camera.

Out of curiosity, do you have the following Sony Vegas Capture setting un-checked?

Inside your capture window, select:
Capture/Options/Preferences ----> "Enable DV device control" (un-check this)

Since you are trying to DV capture with no tape in the device connected via firewire, this will need to be deselected.

Thank you for this. Actually someone on the Vegas forums suggested this a couple of weeks ago and it was exactly what i needed! I do appreciate you commenting on this as well. Maybe someone in the future will see this and benefit from it as well.
