Is this electrical interference? (ATI AIW 9700 Pro video capture)
 

I did a test capture (PAL) from an old VHS movie captured from TV in the begining of 1990. (i have not captured the sound)

I would appreciate if someone can take look at attached the movie and tell me whats wrong. RFI or something else??

My equipment is:

JVC HR-S 8700 EU conected to a Dell Dimension 8200 (Win XP sp2), AIW 9700pro and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard. Capture PAL to HUFFYUV with Virtualdub.

After a lot of try and error, and also much reading on this forum, I got it all working. Very few dropped frames, sound in sync. More accurate colors compared from my Canopus ADVC 300.

Everything would be fine if I would not see these pulsing lines on the captured video.

I might have to go back to my Canopus ADVC 300 again. Capture with AIW was not so easy.

My native language is Swedish so I hope what I wrote is understandable.

Electrical noise aka RF interference (RFI) aka herringbone noise.
Is it present on the original video? If not, then the error lies with your equipment somewhere. It may be the computer's power supply.

These can be annoying to resolve. :wall1:

It is not present on the original video. The more brighter the scene of the movie is, the more you notice the RFI.

Compared to AIW 7200, 7500, 9000, 9200, 9600, 9700, and 9800 is 9700 AIW over represented in terms of this problem.

I know the AIW 9600 can/might have an RFI interference problem, but not sure about the 9700. It is best to do a process of elimination procedure. Switch the 9700 with a different model AIW card that is known to be problem free and be sure to use the ATI removal tool; see the following link:

If your present computer hardware works with the new card, then your 9700 had the problem. If you still have RFI problems, then it is probably your computer hardware that is the cause.

I've did some troubleshooting. Switched off all unnecessary devices. Put ferrite cores on the cables, no improvement.

Managed to get hold of an aiw7500, changed the cards and the interference disappeared.

I feel that the video from the aiw7500 card is a bit softer than the video from the 9700. It's like the video is simply less clean.

Perhaps just my imagination.

Generally, is there any quality differences when capture video between these cards or is the aiw7500 just as good as the aiw9700 (card from the 9000 serie) to capture video. (not including the interference problem)
