Streaks seen during 352x480 capture's playback on TV
 

While viewing the authored DVD on a 42" Panasonic plasma tv, I see "streaks" in the image. I'm sure there's some technical term for this (which I'd be interested to know) but I can't seem to figure out what's causing it.

After doing some tests, it looks like it only appears when I use the 352x480 capture resolution setting. If I choose to capture at 720x480, I don't see these streaks in the image on the TV. However, I'd like to use 352x480 to keep file size down and to put more content on the DVD.

What could be causing this?

Here are my specs:

• ATI 600USB stick for capture
• CMC software: MPEG (DVD), VBR (3900 target, 4000 max), "Keep Interlaced" setting
• Authored with TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4: Interlaced, top field first, default settings

Are you referring to the interlacing artifacts or something else? That combing effect is what happens when viewer interlaced material on progressive scan displays. The TV or upscaling DVD player should take care of it.

Yes, the combing. The odd thing is that I'm seeing the combing effect on the TV when I play back the DVD using my Xbox360. I saw in a guide on this site that we should expect to see this effect on a computer monitor, but not on a TV.

Your XBox isn't deinterlacing the content as it should, simple as that. Try another DVD player. Why the XBox? Chances are you have it connected via HDMI. The XBox natively outputs HD video and likely scales up SD content so the TV's deinterlacer never gets to touch the video. I wouldn't be surprised its a firmware bug as 352x480i DVDs aren't all that common.

The XBOX is a terrible DVD/media player. I have one, and I've never used it for that.
I remember being disappointed. I had to buy a WDTV and a good DVD (now Blu-ray) player for that room. The XBOX is just for games.
