TBC recommendation for this video?
 

I am capturing home videos using a JVC SR-V10U with built-in TBC turned on.
One of my tapes is particularly jumpy, and I wonder if a separate TBC would help/fix the vertical bounce.

i would try that tape in an AG-1980

I will have to double check later today, but I am fairly certain it is SLP.
One interesting thing I noticed, when I play the tape at slow speed, the frames come in pretty clean but the vertical bounce is still there. And the video rolling is still pretty bad in some spots as well.

How does it react with the TBC off, and the JVC image stabilizer on? Any jumping?

Ah, good question. I will try that tonight and post the results. If that doesn't improve things much, do you think an external TBC would help?

External TBC would unlikely help. So no.
My next trial would be in using a Panasonic AG-1980P. It may need a different transport (or tracking range).

When you say it may need a different transport, are you talking about a different physical component or simply changing a setting?

he means the VCR - the VCR's mechanical part is call the transport.

Oh, yes okay got it. I thought he meant that I should try an ag-1980 but use a different transport in the 1980. Now I get it. :)

I tested the JVC playback with TBC off and image stabilizer on, and it was still no good. I will have to try an AG-1980.
One strange thing that has me puzzled... during one of the cleaner sections of the tape, the image is fairly stable, but I cannot get rid of the tracking fuzz. However, when I play the same section in reverse at 1x speed, the image is clean and fuzz-free. What gives? :question:

That doesn't really mean anything. The regular playback of that portion may be damaged is someway. I've seen the same thing. In some rare cases, if the audio is still good, you can capture this too-fast video, slow it back down, and apprend the audio. The video will be stilted, like early 20th century 12fps silents, but you can at least see it again.

I might not have explained correctly. It's not an issue of speed, it's that when playing the tape forward (normal 1x speed) the tracking is bad, and I cannot rid the image of fuzz. But when played in reverse the same section of tape plays clean and tracks perfectly. Strange that the machine track perfectly in 1x reverse but not in normal playback.

how does that tape play in a different deck?

plays terribly in a normal consumer Panasonic. I am looking for an ag-1980 to try now.

What happens at 1.5x forward speed? The JVC does this. That's what I'm referring to.

Lordsmurf I just realized I never responded to your question. I will try 1.5x speed and see if it helps.
I did however just get a Panasonic ag-1980, and it's quite a bit more stable than my JVC V10u. It is still jittery in many places but better than the jvc. I think I'll stick with the 1980 on this tape for now, but I'd like to try this tape again on another deck or two in the future. For future reference, any other recommendations besides the 1980 for difficult-to-track tapes?

One other question as well, in comparing my ag-1980 to the v10u... As you've seen in my video clip, the video on this tape is black and white (but was recorded by a normal cheapo color vhs deck.) The ag-1980 has a toggle switch for Color or Black and White. When set for Color, this tape plays back with lots of color noise across the entire image. When it's set to B&W, it is noise-free. The v10u has no such option, so it only outputs a color image. However I do not see any color noise in the v10u playback. I want to know if this is normal or could be an indicator of a problem with the color processing in my 1980? thanks all

Ag-1980 is about your best bet for commonly available decks
the SR-W5U is better and i have a Japanese model NV-SB900 that i find also superior.
but those type decks are rare and expensive

one of the D-VHS decks might be worth a try -
the Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U or the later JVC's

if you are seeing diagonal red and blue lines in the picture on an AG-1980 then the Y/C card is bad

No diagonal lines. It's just fairly even static like noise. I've been assuming it's just a side effect of playing a B&W tape. I might post a video clip of it later.
