I know we all swear by the ati usb capture device which works beautifully but what about capturing HD? right now I have a tivo and while it is great and does what i need I'd love to cap HBO and other premium channels that tivo has to copy protect so I can't transfer them off my tivo. I think I can do firewire to firewire from the back of my cable box and it should work but my problem is I have insane audio video troubles even though no frames dropped and I run it on a slimmed down os (meaning no antivirus, no internet, no nothing, just what I need to capture and edit and the os is on the hard drive). I've looked into the InfiniTV 4 USB but it is pretty pricy for something that might not work properly anyways.

So are you looking for a device that captures encrypted broadcasts directly into encrypted files?

Or bypassing copy protection by using the output of a cable box connected to a capture device, which necessitates recompressing the broadcast?

if memory serves me right

the device I was looking into uses a cablecard so it would be whatever my isp flags with CCI. which thankfully it next to nothing but HBO/Showtime/few other premimum channels. I can do it the old analog way but that would be a drag. I guess i"m looking to see

1. if anyone caps HD
2. what do they use? and what are the pros/cons of the device they use

The only direct way via firewire with encrypted content would be a DVHS deck. Otherwise, HDMI capture with HDCP "workarounds" is another option.

not sure if there is a similar hack for the tivo, but i was able to get all my stuff off my Dish DVR by opening it up and hooking the sata drive to my PC and using a program to transfer them all. saved a ton of time vs real-time capturing them all.
