im trying to find a short (6 or 7 inch) good quality s-video cable without success
does any know a place that can make one up?

Blue Jeans Cable makes excellent quality cables that don't break the bank. Although their form won't allow you to specify a 0.5 foot length, if you contact them via email I'm sure they can accommodate your needs.

I get everything from Monoprice these days.

Last month, I got some s-video extension cables from Monoprice, so I don't have to ruin the VCR inputs/outputs by constantly plugging and unplugging the s-video. Although I wanted short cables, a foot or so max, they don't exist. I just got the 3-foot cables and coiled them up.
