Ok. So things are going great with my captures. I have a tape that is a little crumpled and keeps getting caught up in the jvc 99000u. So I take a new case and switch out the reel in the new case. As I was doing this I was capturing a good tape with no problems. I put in the "fixed tape" so see if my handy work.....we'll worked. The tape didn't get caught, but it doesn't play right. It's basically a black screen, with a bunch of "noise". Not like the black and white snow noise, but rather a very dark screen. But when I fast forward the image plays correctly! I thought it was something wrong with the repaired tape, but I put in the other tape that until a few minutes ago played just fine.....and just my luck, it's doing the same thing!!!

What did I do????

EDIT:
Got a little scare there. Tapes seem to be playing fine now. Not sure why though?. I hope it doesn't happen again. For safe measure, I cleaned the video head with a little (91%) alcohol and a piece of paper (based on threads I read here). I do have a question regarding cleaning, but I will ask on the general forum.

yes that sound like the crumpled tape may have shed some oxide onto the head.
avoid playing crumpled tape if you can and if you must clean after wards
i prefer chamois to paper as well

Did you see anything on the cleaning swab?

- If so, volksjager is right. It's a good guess.
- If not, something else is at fault. And we'd need to still keep guessing.

But given all the data, it does sound like the most likely reasoning to me as well.
