I recently bought a Panasonic AG-W1 based on the VCR buying guide suggestions here, but it is not working properly. After looking for any possible information on repairing these VCRs, I found posts stating that they aren't good for transferring:

the 4000 and 5000 Samsungs bring decent money on ebay, but i wouldnt use either on my tapes.
if you want to do PAL tapes get one of the recommend PAL S-VHS decks with TBC

We had a few AG-W2 or AG-W3 decks (forget which) a few years ago. Never really used them, as the quality was not up to our standards. I think Rocky Mountain Labs bought one, and somebody on the forum bought another. I forget the details, too long ago.

We still have a Samsung rebadge or the W1/2/3 (again, forget). It's okay for some tapes that hate JVC transports, but it has lower quality for the picture.

These are just VHS VCRs, consumer grade, not S-VHS, not prosumer or professional.
The only VCRs in the buying guide which specifically state Secam capability are:

Aiwa WHVMX100- Panasonic AG-Wx rebadge
Panasonic AG-W1
Panasonic AG-W2 - no SECAM-L
Panasonic AG-W3
Samsung SVW-5000W - Panasonic AG-W2 rebadge
Samsung SVW-7000W - Panasonic AG-W3 rebadge

And these are all basically the same two units only rebadged for the different companies.

So I am looking to know what are the best JVC decks which can play both Secam and PAL?

Here is some further information I've collected from the suggested buying thread replies. According to what I'm understanding here, these models should be capable although may not be recommended players. I'm not totally sure on the models labeled "Ex" - I assume this means any model with an E

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated

AM = multi-format NTSC, PAL, SECAM B
EU = European model, marketed to bulk of Europe, PAL B/G D/K and SECAM B (recorded in MESECAM)
"E" is like "EU" for some model without NICAM stereo receiver
"EH" is like "EU" with NICAM stereo receiver
"Ex" is also like "EU" for the last model
"MS" is for france; standard is PAL B/G and SECAM L (recorded in SECAM L for the secam L)

The MS models are basically the same as the common EU/EK models with a French TV tuner and SECAM-L playback and recording. According to the manual, they can play back all PAL, SECAM, and NTSC (as an NTSC 4.43 signal) tapes.

Would anyone know if the JVC HR-S7600 EU would be Secam capable? Looks to be a good unit, but not sure on Secam playback

Managed to answer my own question regarding the JVC HR S7600 EU by finding the manual online. Looks like it will do MESCAM, which I believe is the same as SECAM B? It will not play Secam-L and the TBC does not work for Secam playback. The tape I need to transfer is from France, but I believe it should work since it is a retail Secam-B tape, unless I misunderstand how Secam-B relates to MESECAM

From the manual (http://www.jvc.co.uk/files/instructi...%20engelsk.pdf)
Quote:
You can play back PAL, NTSC and MESECAM tapes, or record
PAL and SECAM* signals on this recorder. Follow the procedure
below to select the appropriate colour system.
* SECAM signals will be recorded as MESECAM on this recorder;
MESECAM is the designation for tapes with SECAM signals that have
been recorded on a MESECAM-compatible PAL video cassette
recorder

When playing back a MESECAM tape, Digital TBC/NR does
not function even though the TBC/NR button is lit

WARNING
There are two different types of SECAM colour systems: SECAM-L, used in FRANCE (also called SECAM-West),
and SECAM-B, used in Eastern European countries (also called SECAM-East).
1. This recorder can also receive SECAM-B colour television signals for recording and playback.
2. Recordings made of SECAM-B television signals produce monochrome pictures if played back on a video
recorder of SECAM-L standard, or do not produce normal colour pictures if played back on a PAL video
recorder with SECAM-B system incorporated (even if the TV set is SECAM-compatible).
3. SECAM-L prerecorded cassettes or recordings made with a SECAM-L video recorder produce monochrome
pictures when played back with this recorder.
4. This recorder cannot be used for the SECAM-L standard. Use a SECAM-L recorder to record SECAM-L signals
If anyone could help clarify whether this player would work for a French Secam-B tape, you'd be awesome.

The fact this is a good player with an S-Video output is making it look like best option I'm seeing right now within my price-range, if it will work

Based on what I've read since your initial posts on this, MESECAM is SECAM recorded with a PAL VHS method. I don't think it will help with your pre-recorded French tape.

This is what I also thought initially, but further reading I've seen many refer to SECAM-B as MESECAM, which may very well be incorrect but its damn near impossible to find any conclusive information about this online

I have HR-S5700AM. It plays SECAM and I did digitize SECAM VHS recorded in Russia from the Russian TV.

I have a JVC HR-S7611 in the menu it asks what color space, NTSC, PAL, or SECAM. Does this mean it can playback some Secam tapes?

Probably MESECAM recordings, but not French SECAM/SECAM-L, unless there was a french marked variant of it. There is a French S7600MS model that shows up on google but not a 7611MS, just the EU variant which would be PAL/MESECAM/NTSC ON PAL TV. Seems the only difference between the 7611EU and 7600EU is the color of the vcr.

@metaleonid, No the HR-S7600AM does not do SECAM, Only MESECAM, I have two of them.

As far as I know there isn't any JVC S-VHS with built in line TBC and does NTSC/PAL/SECAM natively 525/625, Google search did not give much details about the HR-S7600 model without an additional letter designation. From picture it shown S-VHS/625 so this confirms it does not do NTSC 3.58, So it's either PAL/SECAM/NTSC4.43/PAL60 or PAL/MESECAM/NTSC4.43/PAL60.
