Every movie I record with my JVC Dr-M100 gets squeezed horizontally by VLC. I know I can get the correct aspect ratio by manually selecting "4:3" in VLC, but how can I get VLC to read it correctly by default? Note: I'm not looking to change the settings in VLC, as it would still reproduce the problem on other people's computers.

It's not that big of a deal for me personally, but I know people who just assume the entire DVD is out of whack, or even worse, watch the entire movie with that squeezed aspect ratio!

I attached a picture for reference.

It plays correctly on MPC, but not VLC. Most people I know use VLC, that's why I'm trying to fix it.

I think that VH thread is mostly about conversion. I quickly glanced at it, saw nothing helpful to this topic.

VLC does what it wants -- AND it changes all the time. VLC has pissed me off so much in recent years that I rarely use it now. Media Player Classic (MPC) is far more accurate. It's just the way it goes. To me, it's not much different from Windows getting to be a coding abortion more than a useful OS. Some programs get better with time, some get worse. VLC is worse.

but already I ......... I was reading the image resolution 640 x 480

either change this in the header or re-encode in 640x480

So let's load the VLC, V.2.2.1 ..... set anything, just "Start"

Conclusion, see Screen
VLC shows 352x480 correctly

Whether 352x480 or 640x480 both streams are equal.

testfile originally began PAL encoded with Avisynth to NTSC

1x 352 x 480
1x 640 x 480

Is 640 x 480 a DVD compliant resolution? I'm trying to create a DVD so I don't think resizing to that will work.

Looks like this explains the issue - http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/sh...ratio-vrd-vlc&

No matter what, VLC Media Player will play 352 x 480 incorrectly. My only option is to re-encode the video to 720x480.
