Ok, So Ive played around with Scenalyser all day and the final "Batched " video wont play on my Samsung TV? I tried both AVI 1 and the default AVI 2. AVI 1 wont even play on my pc but AVI 2 does, just not on the tv.
Interestingly, the initial low quality copy in the tape-indices file will play on the tv?
All the other settings are as default.
Anyone else have this problem?
cheers

No never.

AVI Type 1 or Type 2 can not be played on the TV, not DV-AVI, whether Microsoft or Canopus DV DV-AVI.
Only Divx + Xvid AVI container.

I need to have a cut, cut with VirtualDub [Direct Stream Copy] screen and audio.

Converter can be found here 2 ... Canopus DV File Converter and Ulead.
I can try it.

But I speak only German and Swiss dialect.
But I can certainly help.

The easiest way to convert DV AVI to something that a DVD player wants (XviD AVI, H.264 MP4, or DVD MPEG) is to use the freeware Avidemux.

An AVI is just a container (wrapper(. DVD players will not play DV AVI, but only Xvid AVI. The codecs matter.

After "ripping" from tape to HDD with Scenalyser then went to....

1. Canopus DV first and used the Microsoft DVI2 conversion...no luck didnt play on TV

2. Then tried VirtualDUB "Direct Stream copy" ..no good? didnt play on my TV either ?

Any help greatly apreciated

IDEA? With Virtualdub if you set it to "Full Processing mode" it allows you to select the compression codec.
No idea which one from the list will possibly play on the tv if any?

*EDIT..Just saw your post LordSmurf...will try that...cheers

DV AVI is simply not going to play on the TV or DVD/Bluray player. Not at all. It must be converted to Xvid AVI or H264 MP4.

VirtualDub "direct stream copy" will leave the DV AVI as DV AVI for editing. It doesn't convert the codec with that option, though all you can do it simple cuts (no filters).

Ok, for anyone going down this path I now have the solution with much persistence...

"Rip/Convert dvi tape from camcorder to HDD using Scenalyser into AVI 2

Convert to XVid using VirtualDub plus 3 plugins.(Smart Deinterlacer Filter,XviD Codec & Lame MP3 Codec)

Google Smart Deinterlacer Filter for the latest version 1.7

The guide is here....with the links to the codecs

http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/187587

Im happy with the final product

Thanks all for your help and support

The "smart deinterlace" filter is awful. You'll get jaggies everywhere. Even the VirtualDub default "yadif" is better, though neither are as good as QTGMC in Avisynth. Baldrick's guide is more than 10 years old, and reflects lousy methods of the era. That's not a good process to follow.

You'd also have much better quality by using H.264 MP4, not the old Xvid AVI.

I doubt you'll be happy when viewing that at 40"-60" or more, on a nice HDTV. The issues will be obvious. That guide was written in the day when most people still had 20" tube TVs.

I have written above.
ozigoo but it can not play on a PC, so I wrote to edit with VDub.

Divx and Xvid are outdated and not up to date.

H264 there is not .... point forgotten [laughing]
correctly H.264

H.264

Ok thanks guys...is there an updated guide like Baldricks for a noob like myself?
I did a bit of a search and some people have suggested "Megui" as a program? Is this a good 1?
I can follow easy step by step things like "download this program",add this plugin and set this to that etc.
Thats what I liked about Baldricks guide it was very easy to follow...
If you could point me in the right direction for latest "best" software or a step by step guide that would be great...
I downloaded and looked at Avisynth but as I am a noob I have no idea what to set each box at?

Ive decided to stick with Scenalyser for the first part as its a quick an easy way to get the raw material off the tapes and if I set the timecode thingy to about 12 hours it groups my clips into each day of filming which is great, so ill
plug away with that first on my 100+ mini dv tapes...and then mess around with making them playable on the TV later...

Sorry Goldwingfarher I cant quite understand what you are saying at the end there "Free is hybrid developer"?
Are they all programs you have listed and if so which of them is the "best/easiest to follow" cheers
Nero Digital maybe? or "Total Code Studio? Procoder? Is that what yr suggesting there?

Lordsmurf, your input is very much appreciated ...thanks heaps

Im not sure what this means? "This is what he should really do ..Take MP4 AVC + AAC that and a good interlacer?

Whats "Take MP4 AVC + AAC" ? a good interlacer you can suggest?

Thanks for the help , much appreciated...

Ps sorry for all the questions =/

Thank you for a quick reply....
Is there a good guide to use it?
What to set each box too?
Step by step is best for me...lol..
And best"deinterlacer" in that program?
Thanks again

Hi I Downloaded Hybrid.
Can you suggest the best settings for me?
Or do I just leave all the defaults and use it as is?

I really am a noob and not up with all the terminology,
so maybe if you suggest "click this tab and select this value" etc
would be really helpful.. thanks

I wrote a guide here for converting AVI to MPEG using Avidemux: http://www.digitalfaq.com/guides/vid...idemux-pt1.htm
Instead of MPEG, choose x264. Leave the default options.
The source DV AVI should load with no issues.

When I get more time later this year, I need to add quite a few guides to this site. I may add the wiki soon.
