Hello,
First of all please excuse me because I know this has been discussed a million times. I have read many of the threads and just want to get a final opinion.
I have a 34 VHS-C tapes (each 45 minutes) and want to transfer them to my computer rather than writing to DVD. Based on lordsmurf and other people's suggestions I decided to get a Panasonic AG1980 and the JVC C-P7U adapter. To connect the player to PC I will get the Elgato Analog to USB adapter.
So my questions are:
1. Does a camcorder provide a better quality compared with the Panasonic AG1980?
2. Is this setup good? Or Are there better/cheaper options for me?

Or maybe the JVC SR-V10U / SR-V10 is better?

Can @lordsmurf help me?

Thanks

Stick with the Panasonic.

Assuming you plan to lossless YUY2 with huffyuv or Lagarith, the Elgato will work but users report it's somewhat noisy. I seem to recall that VirtualDub doesn't recognize Elagto's capture-time proc amp for controlling valid video levels, but I've seen where other users are doing it. Isn't Elgato capture limited to 640x480 or 640x576/PAL? The usual cap is 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL. Try it and let us know how it goes.

You are right. That is the resolution. Do I have another choice? I was thinking of ATI 600 USB, but it does not have a good rating on Amazon.

The ATI 600 USB is one of several recommended devices (the Elgato isn't isn't in that group). Obviously the #1 choices are All In Wonder AGP and X-series AIW PCIe, but they require XP. DV devices aside, which we constantly warn against and which won't give you a lossless capture, here are some others: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...ti-wonder.html

A caution about Amazon reviews: Most of them are from clueless users who have no idea what they're doing and aren't capturing to lossless media anyway. I recall reading bad reviews years ago about the excellent AIW 9600XT Radeon AGP, one of the best AGP cards around back then. Fortunately I ignored them and got my info from a tech site. and still use that card 12 years later. There are plenty of examples of work with recommended devices posted in this forum, including many of my own. There are also examples of godawful problem tapes, for which you need a good card, a good player, and some post processing skills. Capture is only the first step, seldom a finished product.

You didn't mention an external frame-level TBC, which you're likely to need as well.

Good VCR.
A camcorder (consume video camera) will not be better, no.
ATI excellent, Amazon reviews not accurate.
Elgato a brand, not model, some decent, some not.
