Tearing on newly acquired JVC SR-V10U

Hey all,
I've been using a Panasonic AG-1980 (serviced by TGP) as my main capture deck for about a year now. I was curious enough, though, to get a JVC VCR on the recommended list to see how it would perform. Unfortch it suffers from some very bad tearing and what looks like slightly blown out levels (see attached screenshots). This is with Digital TBC/NR on, Digital R3 off. Both times the video has been run through a Datavideo TBC-3000.
So. Is this fixable, or should I try to return the deck?

I don't know how I missed this post initially. :hmm:

Thanks for the reviving it via PM.

But the answer is probably easy. I'd need to see the deck in person to give a definitive answer. But offhand, seeing and reading everything here, there's a chance that the heads are shot. I've seen something exactly like that once or twice in the past. At least once, it was definitely the heads.

If it was always like this, and it was bought from non-qualified sources (ie eBay, and likely with a "works great" condition stated), then I'd bet its a simple case of the deck having either:
(a) been "cleaned" wrong by a moron using Q-Tips, as seen on Youtube guides from equally unqualified morons -- and ironically, probably didn't need to be cleaned at all (ie, all the dumb "clean the heads" knee-jerk responses you see online, also from unqualified non-video know-nothings)
(b) just an old deck that been run into the ground, probably no maintenance ever, heads completely shot

Yes, pet peeves = eBay, cleaning heads, Q-tips. No good comes of it. :wink2:

Since this is an older post, clearly too late to return.
If you still have it, maybe good for parts. Whatever you do, do not discard the unit as trash. All S-VHS decks have some value, even if not working.
