Video fine, but audio sounds like chipmunks?

Welp after weeks I finally got virtualdub to recognize the vhs capture and ran a test vid.

I used HuffyUV for the video but left the audio uncompressed.

During recording, the audio sounded fine. But when it was done and I opened the file to check it, all the voices and music were sped up! Only after the first few minutes though. And the video itself looks fine.

Any idea what would cause this, or how to fix it?

Which card are you using?

Verify ALL of your capture settings. The audio/video on the bottom of the main capture screen, the video filter/pin/crossbars, and all audio settings. It should be stereo 48kHz uncompressed everywhere. Verify the audio with a quick "playback while capture" test (even if not capturing, just listen). Be sure it is OFF when actually capturing (unless you have a known compatible card for that, of which there are few).

Using the Diamond Onetouch usb thingy.

After checking my settings I think it has something to do with timing...

When I use the defaults (drop frames when close together, insert null frames, and resample audio to video by resampling audio) then I get the chipmunk voices, at least for this one video in particular.

When I try again without syncing, well then the audio is normal, it just goes out of sync. :T

I think the issue is the original recording stops and starts here and there where I tried to skip commercials, which may be muddling things a bit...

Any idea on the next settings to try? Or should I just try and resync the audio manually for the one that did kinda work?

(also here is the hilariously messed up first recording... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seGTfTWd0E4 The audio speed up starts at 00:40. Weird thing is the audio does sound normal speed when doing the playback while capturing.)

You must resample to maintain sync. If it's going chipmunk due to resample, you have a wrong setting somewhere.

The stop/start issue probably would not cause any issue if using a TBC. Are you?

I'm starting to think you have multiple issues at hand.

You didn't mention what OS, but WinVista+ audio controls can also pose problems, as you're able to set kHz from within there.

Looking at the capture -- yeah, terrible. You need both internal TBC to remove those wiggles, and external to stabilize the signal. That's easily your main issue, not even the audio. (I still have a TBC and S-VHS VCR available, PM if interested. If you're a toon collector like I am, do it. You'll kick yourself for not doing it earlier! That was my thought in the late 90s. Best thing I ever bought, even if it was a few bucks.)

The chipmunk suggests 50% change somewhere. Verify you have 29.97 video, not 15fps, causing a 50% drop resample of the audio. That would be odd, because it usually just drops zillions of frames. Yet not impossible.
