Does anyone here transfer 8mm reel to DVD?
 

My father has quite a bit of video footage from long ago from places like Spain and whatnot, including footage of Bull fights and the likes and I would like to get them transferred over to DVD for him. Does anyone do this type of work? Of know someone who does?

I prefer to deal with folks that clean the film prior to transferring it. You can also have it scanned (expensive) or screened (cheap). It depends on how much you want to spend. They typically charge by the hour, or by the foot.

I would suggest a place that does it to DV tape. Maybe XP mode on a good DVD recorder (not Panasonic, not Philips).

hi, contact this guy: drblake1@cox.net he did some transfers of beta to dvd for me and it went well. he is not too expensive and i believe he also does film transfers like 8mm, 16mm, etc. i believe you can also find info on him here: Newsgroups: alt.video.tape-trading

The Idea looks nice, but does it work? It would be nice, especially since my dad has quite a few reels of footage. None have sound, so I don't have to worry about that.

It's really easy to make a bad quality transfer. That's all I'll say. You really cannot do this at home, it's too hard and requires lots of $$$$$ of hardware to do even a halfway decent job.

I found it on Ebay. There are a couple of them for sale. They don't have to be the greatest transfers, just good enough to watch. Anyway, this route would only run around $150 total, so I may try it first and see, then go another way if it doesn't work out. I think he has between 15 - 30 reels of footage, so I would be looking at $$$$$$ for a pro.

ahh the old converter boxes. These were really popular in the late 80's-early 90,s. I have seen the one you mentioned. I have one from Ambico. They actually do a decent job (better then filming it off a white screen/wall, etc). HOWEVER the real pain in the ass is getting your video camera exactly level with the height of the converter box for proper transfer, likewise adjusting the height of your 8mm projector to "broadcast" properly inside the box

Yeah, I was reading up on them and realized I would need to buy a 8mm projector as well. I missed an auction tonight for the total package, ie projector and box. Oh well, I'll keep looking. One of the site LS mentioned would only be about $430 or so for 30 reels converted to 2 Mini DV tapes. That's not too bad, but I'll wait and see.

Tcel, I deleted one of the sites from that list. The guy was an idiot and does not know what he is doing with video.
I would suggest the woodland site, try 1 reel with them.
