I've acquired (free) a Panasonic AG-6750 to play back my home videos. I understand it's meant for time-lapse, but if there is a setting to make it behave like a consumer VCR, then please let me know.
I've attempted with multiple tapes, but nothing appears on screen.
Perhaps it's just a different animal.

Anyone know? It seems a shame to toss this heavy duty machine, but I'm starting to purge the clutter.

There's a reason that ancient pro/broadcast decks are not recommended. It's made for a very specific use, and will not function outside of that narrow use case. Old decks like this can be SP only, S-VHS only, etc.

To capture VHS with quality, you need one of these: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...ing-guide.html

Issues like this is exactly why I wrote that guide.
