Sony Vegas - best file format for rendering?

Analog video input via Canopus ADVC100 to Dell PC. Capturing the video within Sony Vegas 13 (no other program would recognize the VHS/Canopus input). So a question for those with more experience. If I am just wanting to extract this VHS video and store on server in a viewable format (mp4? mpg?).... what file format is optimal but also not a huge file??

Hope this made sense!
Thanks

If you plan to stream your captures, you should use an h.264 codec. MP4 and MKV are containers for h.264 video. Check out this thread where another user with a Canopus capture card wants to stream digitized home video.
