Any before/after photos of a Huffy to DVD conversion?

Just curious, I did a few and the quality was definitely noticeable on an action VHS, not sure what expectations should be.

Post a source clip -- with your MPEG conversion work. ;)

Let's take a look. :)

If you want to FTP a larger clip (500mb max), then read this: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/news...mbers-how.html
You're premium, you have this feature.

Huffyuv = ~35gb/hour = 500mb per minute. That's plenty. Even 30 seconds, 250mb, is plenty for a sample clip.

Unfortunately, I don't have any tapes left - someone else has them :cool:

Hi, I'm just curious about the "Huffyuv = ~35gb/hour"...what does it mean if im capturing less or more data then that in an hour using huffyuv in virtualdub. I have one capture file that is 3hr,38min and is 98.9gb in size(missing roughly 10gb), another 2hr,1min @ 57gb(missing roughly 13gb) and one more which actually has more then 35gb per hour with 1hr, 59min of video @ 82.8gb.

Thank you.

Assuming you captured 720x480 or 720x576, or the 640x480 equivalent, perhaps you're capturing to RGB instead of YUY2? That would make a bigger capture file. Generally, capturing VHS to RGB directly is not a good idea unless you've taken certain precautions. And if you don't need to go thru any RGB processing, it's an unnecessary and less than perfect colorspace conversion.

You have two at ~30gb/hour, and one at ~40gb/hour. It's average. :)

You need to understand how lossless works, if you want to understand why it varies. Huffyuv is based on Huffman coding, similar to zip compression. The full math is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huffman_coding

By default, isn't VirtualDub YUY2? Meaning he'd have to intentionally change it it RGB. :hmm:

I'm not 100% sure on this anymore, as it's been years since I installed it. I'd have to install it fresh on a new system to be sure. I'm also not sure if the official site download would be different from the one we provide for our members here.

I believe its 24-bit RGB

Thank you both for the replies,

Under video>compression>set custom format, it is at 720x480 YUY2, and under video>compression>configure button, YUY2 compression method is on Predict median (best), RGB compression method: Predict gradient(best) field threshold @ 480 lines, & Enable full size output buffer is selected. both selections seem to be the same settings?

are these settings the best to use for VHS capture?

Thank you for that link.
