I've heard many good things, with a VCR, proc amp, and TBC it should work out pretty well.

It's the same as the Philips DVD HDD recorder from 2007, and I have one. It's indeed excellent, and something I purchased after quite a bit of research at the time. The Philips/Magnavox is the last HDD DVD recorder to ever exist, and thankfully it's a good one. Slight variations have been coming out under the Magnavox name every couple of year. That one is from 2012. The first one was from 2008/2009 or so.

It's not as good as the Zoran based RCA, in terms of the image quality. I'm nitpicking here.

It's not a LSI unit, so it's not good for VHS work.

Mine was purely for recordings on TV/cable. The only reason I'm currently not using it is because I do not have cable, satellite or even the ability to get antenna channels in my current location. So it sits in a box for now. (I need to still get some recordings off it, however. Keep forgetting to do that! As you probably know, moving wasn't in the plans.)

Good to hear. I read your article on the LSI chipset boxes and have had trouble finding anything decent on eBay. Are any still available new?

LSI Logic DMN-86xx "Domino" chipsets only existed from 2003-2006. Only recorders from those years have it. However, at that time, most recorders did use it, so there's are many models from that era.

I have several -- Polaroid, Samsung, LiteOn, and JVCs. Each has it's quirks, but JVC is easily the best.

There were only a few HDD units with LSI chips, and I'm not overly fond of them. Too many mechanical issues. The Polaroid 2001G is the best one. You can easily swap out the DVD burners and HDD as well. There's a 320gb drive in this one.
