Select range and offset audio to maintain a/v sync in Virtualdub?

See attached screenshot. Most of my captures have extra static in the beginning and the end and I have been narrowing down the range by setting the start and end offset. Do I need to check or uncheck the box to offset audio to maintain a/v sync? Is selecting the range of frames independent from the audio track henceforth the need to offset the audio as well?
