What type of sharpening is this? (DVD recorder)

I am pretty sure the source was a VHS to DVD job, the noise is annoying as hell but in the right parts it seems to bring out detail. I am sure this is sharpening but I haven't seen sharpening like this before with my sources. I believe it was made on a Panasonic or JVC DVD recorder roughly 10 years ago.

Most of that appears to be drop-frame deinterlace noise -- not sharpening. However, basic sharpening (ie, "sharpening" in VirtualDub) may have been applied afterwards, which enhanced/halo'd the deinterlace noise.

Most DVD recorders do not have controls, no. Some over-sharpen automatically -- usually older pre-2006 not-good models like Philips/Magnavox or Cyberpower.
Some recorders (usually off-brand models) would also "convert" PAL (from a PAL VCR) to NTSC, by using the standard not-good hardware method of drop-frame deinterlace. If this sample is from a DVD recorder, this is a likely candidate for what happened, not knowing more details. I'd need to see the DVD recorder menu. I know what many/most look like. |

Nope. That's a Panasonic DVD recorder menu, used on recorders from 2002-2006.
Panasonic did oversharpen on the earliest recorders -- the E20 and E30, mostly. Examining the IRE and luma color shifts would determine which E## model it was. The earlier models had crap IRE. The latter models had green tints to the luma, in an attempt to fix the IRE issue. The chipset was scrapped after that, using LSI for a year or two on the ES models, then returning to in-house chips for a year on later ES models. Panasonic did not make recorders after that. The IRE in the original sample does look light, so I'd wager on the E20 or E30. Those all recorders sucked. |
