AV Toolbox AVT-8710 vs. Sony Digital8 Handycam TBC, which is better?

Hi everyone,

I intend to transfer several VHS tapes I have, and will be sending out the analog signal from the VCR to my Sony Handycam Digital8 DCR-TRV330 camcorder as a pass-through to firewire signal to my computer.

I was wondering if the built-in TBC and Digital Noise Reduction feature of my Sony Digital8 Handycam will be sufficient or if I actually need to buy the AVT-8710. If I do buy the AVT-8710, then I will need to send the analog signal again to the Sony Handycam as a way of digitizing the signal. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Those TBCs have different functions.

The AVT-8710 purifies the signal, replacing parts of it to accomplish this. The effect that we need to worry about is that it prevent dropped frames. It's a continuous properly-timed signal.

A camera TBC is often very weak, affecting a tape only on playback. It rarely has passthrough. However, some models did! But it was mostly DV, not Digital8. Canon was known for this, not Sony.

You'd need to test it.
