PAL SVHS aspect ratio to choose

Hello everyone, I am looking for help to decide which values I have to set to convert my SVHS-AVI PAL video files to MKV thru MEGUI from a size point of view. My target is Smart TV player (or Android box tv or PC) and I would like to see these files as 16:9.

Source files are SVHS-AVI PAL, 720x576, 5:4, interlaced, 25FPS, acquired with VirtualDub/HuffYUV (no filters), color space YUY2, audio is PCM (48kHz, 16bits, 2 channels).

With MEGUI interface, I have to crop the bottom because of SVHS noise and thru AVS script interface I crop 18 at the bottom and resolution parameters shows to 712x552; then I changed input DAR from 5:4 to ITU 4:3, but when I played on Smart TV was showed with black bars. If I use Input DAR ITU 16:9 the I see it as 16;9 on Smart TV player. May you would suggest best values to use ? Should I use ITU 4:3, ITU 16:9 or stay with 5:4 ?
Many thanks, GB

Please god no. Stretch-mode is for dummies.

It's better (more compatible) to centre the image and encode to a standard 720x576 resolution by hard-coding black bars.

Cropping 18 at the bottom is a crazy-large amount (3x typical). Your VCR needs to be adjusted. What model(s)?

My VCR is Panasonic NV-FS90, not more working though. May you suggest which statements to use with the AVS script for crop/resize/DAR ? Many Thanks

Your question was alraedy answered in post #2, above. Do not resize interlaced video. Not ever.

If you want a crop statement for YUY2 video in Avisynth logic, to remove bottom border noise and restore the original frame dimensions:
Code:

Crop(0,0,0,-18).AddBorders(0,8,0,10)
Leave your frame size at 7620x576, encode at 4:3 (Display Aspect Ratio). Do not stretch your video, it will be distorted. You can't resize as interlaced anyway. You will have blended fields and chroma ghosting. Only a clueless newbie would do that. See also:
