Monitor buying decisions - IPS? ViewSonic vs Dell?
 

I'm finally going to get a good IPS monitor, and I know that, just like with Audio work,you need a good set of Studio Reference Monitors, the same is true for Video/Photo work. After looking at several Q&A's here on the subject from me and others, (Lordsmurf,sanlyn,ect..) I made a list of recommended brands to help my search; View-sonic,NEC,Asus,LG,Acer,HP and Dell (Ultra Sharp?) I had to up my budget to $150-200.00 (On Sale by the way, not Retail price!). I have seen some other odd-ball brands for cheap (IPS) and the reviews are horrible!, Mostly monitors that start loosing it on the left side, or strange color smears after 3-6 months. (Does anyone have a list of brands to avoid?) I'm thinking of settling on View-sonic, and even they have some "Budget" priced monitors as well as good ones, but I noticed they have a 3 year warranty, and they even reply to their bad reviews on Amazon!. Sorry for the long post, but $$ are short right now!..And even though the ATI AIW card only has VGA out, I'm sure an IPS monitor (most have VGA in) would be better than my current, older LCD monitors, and/or especially LCD TV's.

You can't really go by brand name most of the time. And the cheapies just don't cut it, the shortcomings drive you haywire and they don't last long. The only "brand" I'd go with would be Dell's Ultrasharp line. There's nothing wrong with VGA input, BTW.

I guess you also know that videographers and photogs also have calibration kits to adjust their monitors. Lacking this, Dell's Ultrasharps generally come out of the box with decent color and other specs, better than most.

Wow thanks for quick reply sanlyn, I'll check on Dell, the more time-saving the better!..seems I have spent the past few years doing nothing but up-dating/troubleshooting/reading forums/learning/testing/ect. both for my Audio and Video PC projects, all w/o producing a satisfactory finished Video Project (as a non-pro)...( I do have the Audio tape transfer thing rolling)..But as Lordsmurf stated early-on, this Video thing does take a lot of patience/trial and error/ect.:)

I paid about $275 each for my pair. I have zero issues with them, no complaints ever.
