OH sorry for the misunderstanding. Fullhd is the resolution I want for my monitor not for capturing.
And I don't know why the 9800 pro is not putting it out via dvi. But I am sure I have a big problem with the output of the vhs. I connected it to the TV and tried three different VHSs and all looked seriously bad.

The card may be bad.
Or the drivers are wrong, bad install, or not ideal. Try a reinstall with other drivers. (I'll get you that disc image tomorrow.)

I tried other new drivers from the internet and with them I can go as high as 2048 x 1536. (I have a 2560x1440 monitor). The problem is, the video capturing is not working with them. I also got the CD CD 180-V01068-100. The problem is I cannot install anything. The installation aborts immediately with the error code 0x80040707.

You can always use the ATI Omage graphic driver, and then all of ATI drivers for capture. It's not reliable, but I'd done it in the past. An error code may be an issue with previous installs/uninstalls. You need to run a "ATI clean" utility to completely flush the system.

I think for now I will just stick with the drivers I have. It is working, but I can only go up to 1600 and not 1920 resolution on the monitor.

If I update the WDM and display drivers to the most recent ones (from the ATI website), I can achieve 1920 on the monitor, and everything else is working, too, with one big exception. This is, VirtualDub cannot access the WDM device anymore, it says it is in use, although it isn't. Capturing with the MMC works, though.

I am also looking into buying a Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U, since the Panasonic 1980p I got was defective. Is this a good player for VHS-c or is it as bad as the JVCs with tape transport?

The artifacts from non-native pixels would drive me nuts. I'd personally still go for 1920x1280 resolution, as I know it's possible. It may be a simple issue of a full ATI wipe, then careful reinstall of the best CD ISO.

VirtualDub is also a must. Not working is definitely a driver install issue. Wipe and retry.

Do you need the ATI uninstall utility? Or did you already find it from the AMD/ATI site?

I'd consider the Mitsubishi in the same league as the JVCs.

Well I have a 2560x1440 screen anyway, so I need to live with non native resolution anyway, so it's not worth the effort. I tried all the CDs that are on here on always freshly installed Win XP SP2 systems and none was able to achieve 1920x1200. The newest drivers from ATI made that possible, but then the WDM capture device wasn't usable in VirtualDub.

The Mitsu is in the same league as the JVCs quality wise or regarding tracking? Or asked in a different way: Do I also have to be as afraid of the VCR eating the tape if I get that Mitsu?

I got the Mitsubishi VCR now, and it's working like a charm! I also got a TBC for free and need someone's opinion on that. It is a PrimeImage MultiII (see attached pictures). Can I use this or should I go with the AVT 8710?

The PrimeImage works fine, but is really loud. I switched to an AVT 8710 (a green one, so no chipset problems). I am capturing with VirtualDub in HuffYuv. The problem is now, that I don't get dropped frames but inserted frames. About 1 every minute. So after 2 hours I have about 120-140 inserted frames? What can be done about this?

I think I found the problem, but I don't know, how to resolve it. My chain looks like this: Mitsubishi HD-2000U- AVT 8710, ATI AiW 9800 Pro.

So the problem apparently is, that the average frame rate of the video is too low: 29.955fps vs 29.97 fps, which would give me about one inserted frame every minute. So now the question is: what is the reason for this?

First ensure you can capture without drops/inserts when audio capture is disabled.

Hi,
I tried it without audio. Still inserts frames (1 about every minute), due to too low framerate. The weird thing is that for the first 1-2 minutes the framerate is about 29.97 but it then drops to 29.95. I tried it with two VCRs, with and without the TBC. Therefore I suspect the capture card or it's drivers.

Does the same thing happen when you capture at a lower resolution?

Yes, the same thing happens. I tried the newest drivers from the ATI website, and no frame inserts are happening and the fps are stable. Only problem. The picture seems shiftet to the right and there is a big black line on the right side. And MMC is not working.

It all comes down to drivers, I think. LordSmurf, you wanted to upload a CD, which I could try. And what driver versions are you guys using wit a 9800 Pro AiW?

According to an old post of mine, I most recently used a driver version dated 2009-03-31 with my AIW 9800 Pro. Been quite a while since I've touched it though.

In some folders on this computer, I have Catalyst 9.8 which for some reason is paired with the release notes from 9.3. I believe that is what I installed.

Hmmm. FWIW it may be clock error somewhere. (As I recall, back 10+ years ago some camcorders did have inaccurate clocks.)

The errors were not so bad as to cause an issue with TV viewing, but if fed into a system that insisted on using its own internal own clock rather than sync its clock to the input signal, you could get occasional dropped or inserted frames.

Does it happen with different sources too, or just appear to be a driver issue?

Solved the issue! By not selecting the WDM but the DirctShow driver in VirtualDub, I have no frame inserts and drops! The card shows up under two drivers, which is weird but now I am happy with the result.

You would have known not to use that WDM-VFW compatibility layer had you read the VDub manual.

VirtualDub Help File (Help -> Contents)
Quote:
The Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32) driver

If you have a Windows Driver Model (WDM) driver installed, you may also have an entry in the device list called Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32) (VFW). This entry comes from a Microsoft driver called VFWWDM32 and is a wrapper that allows WDM-model drivers to be used through the older Video for Windows (VFW) API. The WDM driver that is adapted can be selected through the Video Source driver dialog.

There are unfortunately some quirks in the way this adapter works, and some video capture devices will work erratically or not at all through this wrapper. Device settings not accessible through VFW will also still not be available when using it. If possible, use the capture device directly in DirectShow mode rather than using the VFWWDM32 driver.
Old capture tips (written before he added support for DirectShow drivers)
Quote:
ATI appears to be shipping their current devices with a WDM (Windows Driver Model) driver only; this can be used indirectly by VirtualDub through a Microsoft wrapper, but it is crippled in functionality and it also appears that the wrapper is buggy.

The wrapper will show up as "Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)." If it works for you, great.

Yeah, I didn't do that 😆
But now I am happy it is working like a charm. And I am really happy with the quality.

Ok,
I have converted almost 40 videos so far and everything looks good. The only issue I have is, that for two tapes the top screen tearing happens.
So should I buy a Panasonic E10/15 and this might fix it? And how would the chain look?
Mitsubishi HD-2000u (active TBC) -> Panasonic E10 -> PrimeImage external TBC -> ATI AiW
Or should I leave the PrimeImage out? And should I activate or deactivate the mitsubishis TBC?
