21:9 footage output to 16:9 project in Vegas Pro 14
 

Hi,

I currently have a small video project I am working on where I am dealing with 2 different aspect ratios. The first set of videos is 1920 x 1080 @ 60fps at 16:9 aspect ratio shot on a Sony NXR-100 video camera, and the other set is PC screen captured footage at 3440 x 1440 21:9 aspect ratio.

I use Vegas Pro 14 for editing. I am not sure how to output/render this with Vegas, as I am not sure if I can render the final project to the 3440 x 1440 in Vegas. The target media to out put this to is for archiving on my PC and to youtube.

The video will have scenes that switch between the two formats, but will also have picture in picture sections where the footage from the camera sits in the corner of the PC screen shot footage. Any advice on how I should go about the work flow on this?

You want to prep the assets to match resolution before mixing.
Decide on final output size.

I would like to shoot for the 3440 x 1440 for the youtube video. There is a lot of text on the screen cap from the PC footage from websites that I would like to preserve as best as possible.

Part of this decision also depends on exactly how complex the editing will get. You need to be aware of quality loss at every step. For example, upscaling 1080p to the odd computer monitor sizing will begin to turn soft and have some resize distortion (even with proper pillar bars).

This is why I don't attempt complex mixed-source edits very often.

Yea, I didn't think much about it first, but I see now the error of my ways ha. I plan on switching the computer resolution to 1920 x 1080 for future sessions like this.
