Using ATI AIW 9800 Card For Monitor
 

My XP PC has one AGP slot and several PCI slots. I had to remove the existing AGP graphics card connected to the monitor and now need to figure out where to re-connect it. One option is to use the output from the newly installed AIW card and the other is to find and use a dedicated PCI graphics card.

The question is, would having the monitor connected to the AIW card at the same time I am using it for video work adversely affect the video work, slow down the card or tax the system in any way? And if so, or if it is even marginal, what PCI card would you recommend I get to use in connecting the monitor.

I don't understand. For decades video pros and graphics workers have respected the AIW AGP line as being among the best graphics cards available.



You should be calibrating your monitor, as well, or it doesn't make any difference what you use.


A PCI card in an AGP machine will be slow as hell. Don't do it.

My question was whether the AIW 9800 card was intended to drive a monitor AND process video input at the same time. It would seem that it should, but I wanted to check here with the experts to see if doing so would have any negative effects on the video processing.

I run just the AIW as a video card. No issues, but be aware if using a CRT that the onboard DAC sucks and is blurry at high refresh rates.

The AIW 9800 is a great video card and you will have no trouble using it for video output at the same time as you capture. Now, if you attempt to multitask and play some high-powered classic game at the same time as you capture the processor in your computer might choke...but that's a CPU issue, not the video card. If you're just running VirtualDub and using it to monitor and control the capture you'll be fine.
