pal to ntsc audio

Hey folks, I've been working on converting some pal mpeg1 to mpeg2 ntsc. For the video I've used tmpgenc 1/2KDVD template with an adjusted FR of 29.97 (my player only works with this). The vid is all OK.

Next the audio. I demuxed the audio using tmpgenc and then try to use Besweet to convert pal to ntsc ( 25->29.97). When doing this the audio comes out at a higher pitch ( like chipmunks ) but when I muxed with bbmpeg everything is atleast in syn. If I convert pal to ntsc (25-> 23.97) then the pitch is OK but ofcourse everything is out of syn when I remux.

What can I do to get the audio still in syn but sounding normal.

I wish I could have encoded at 23.97 which would have eliminated this problem but unfortunately my player doesn't work when I encode at this FR.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Jag

That is normal : this operation is only a basic increase of the reading speed (what you read before in 1 second is now read in 1*25/29.97 second).

Your error is that, if you need to do a PAL->NTSC, you have to convert to the video in 23.976 (and not in 29.97) and use the "3:2 pulldown during playback" option allowed for MPEG2 (see in the video settings of tmpgenc).

Yes it does. Almost all DVD are in 23.97 with 3:2 pulldown flag on.

Do it as DialHot suggested and watch here how to apply/encode the Pulldown flagged mpeg2 stream at 23.976.
www.incredible.de.tf/pulldown.html

If you got "sensible" ears you will hear the new converted audio from 25 to 23.976 FPS Audio a bit low toned. This you can avoid if doing a little "tone only" up-pitch using for example GoldWave before converting to 23.976 mp2. Or if you're in mathematics you can also use Goldwave to directly convert the speed (without tone change) from 25 FPS to 23.976 FPS using percentual values in the filter settings.
Just a hint

Thanks guys this is very helpful. I do know for a fact if I make a KVCD the 23.97 FR doesn't work on this player but I did fail to consider it may work with a authored DVD which is what I'm trying to do.

Given I've already encoded 22 episodes at the 29.97 FR ( about 50hrs of computer time ) is there anything I can use to get to 23.97 without re-encoding... and preserving picture quality?

Thanks very much again.

1. in your older encodings it sems to me you just authored the KVCD including the unflagged 23.976 stream, thats why it didn't play well.
So use the pulldown method as explained in the link.

29.976 to 23.976 even if source is 29.976 full interlaced ... is possible!
BUT: Are you in Avisynth?

I have always followed black princes method, which appears to be updated from my version.

I wouold rip with DVD decrypter. Then DVD2avi. Encode the video with tmpgenc using a KDVD template ( at 29.97 ). Encode the audio with HeadAC3. Mux with bbmpeg. Then use VCDeasy to make SVCD.
All settings have always been as outlined by black princes method.

Its just when I used the KDVD template with the 23.97 3:2 pulldown as set I could never get it to work unless I fixed it at 29.97. Now clearly I may have something else set wrong to cause this prob.

1) So do I have to re-encode everything or is their an application that'll allow me to get back to 23.97 easily and quickly?

2) If I do have to re-encode are the default settings for 23.97 FR/ 3:2 pull down in the KDVD / 1/2KDVD O.K. to use. They look the same to me as the above article?

Thanks a bunch, Jag

If only I had encode to 23.97 in the first place....?
