how to encode 4:3 video to 16:9 without getting the bars on the side?

I just did my first successful kdvd disc with 4 movies 7 1/2 hours onto 1 dvd-r. two of them were 4:3 and two were 16:9. the two that were 4:3 had black bars on top & bottom built in. When I encoded them using the tmpgenc using KDVD-352x480-Half-D1-_NTSC_.mcf, I go into the settings and change to 16:9 on the two that were 16:9 and it leaves me with two bars on the side and shrinks the resolution to match (not acceptable) when I encode them to 4:3 they look streched and a little more pixelated then the other two.
My question is how to encode them to 16:9 without getting the bars on the side?

Hi dvd_maniac,

352x DVD resolutions requires 4:3 aspect. Only 704x480 or 720x480 define 16:9 aspect. Specs here: http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/DVD/Book_B/Video.html

oh, ok

Does that mean I can only use the dvd full template (6hr)? or can I change the dvd half res template to 704x480? or does it have to be 720?

It means that if you use the KDVD Half D-1 template, you have to encode with output aspect set to 4:3. Just make sure that you set 4:3 on TMPEG on the Video tab on "Aspect Ratio".
If you want to encode a 16:9 anamorphic movie, and you want the resulting mpeg to be anamorphic, you must use 704x or 720x resolutions.

I don't know if I understood that right ?! But I have made many svcd:s with that anamorphic tap on. I mean that when I watch those svcds with 16:9 wide tv all is ok, but when I watch those with 4:3 tv all people in the movie are coneheads. And never used resolution 704x or 720x.

Or is this only releated with DVD:s ?

Hi Critter,

For DVD compliancy 352x480 (Half D-1) must be encoded as 4:3.
