Visible noise with Blockbuster

Hi folks!

I'm having a problem with blockbuster noise. Here is the story:
I'm doing a DVD rip of a The Corrs's live performance. The background is in dark blue, and Andrea (lead vocals) is using a black dress, so the show is quite dark, but Andrea has a pretty white skin.

I believe that the settings that kwag (and many of us) is using with blockbuster should apply the noise just on dark areas (?), but I can see plenty of noise in her arms. So my question is, how should I change the settings in order to have less, or no noise applied to her white arms?

Here is the settings I'm using:
Blockbuster( method="noise", detail_min=1, detail_max=10, variance=1 )
Blockbuster( method="sharpen", detail_min=20, detail_max=90, strength=StrengthValue)

Thanks!

Hi muaddib,

I use
Blockbuster( method="noise", detail_min=1, detail_max=10, variance=.5, cache=1024 )

I hope this helps. BTW, Blockbuster sharpen increases file size greatly.
Check that StrengthVaule is correct for the resolution (352x240, 528x480,
etc.) Use LegalClip() before Resize and after AddBorders. :)

The luma_threshold parameter is only effective in conjunction with luma_offset. It doesn't affect anything else.

If the noise generated is too visible I'd say you have the variance set too high. Try reducing it .1 at a time until it becomes acceptable.

Hi guys! Thanks for the answer.

I tried to reduce the variance and I can't notice a difference between 1 and .5!
That's when tried to examine the source again... oh boy... the noise was in the source.
Strange that the noise is only on some parts of the source, and that was what confused me.
Well, it was my mistake (not the filters or the settings).
BTW SansGrip, the filters are awesome! :D

Thanks again,

Hi muaddib,

Don't you just hate that
That's the kind of DVD mastering the industry is doing :x
Some parts of the movie look great, and others look like crap. I can see all those faults on my HDTV. I've seen some scenes on some of the KVCDx3 and 704x480 PLUS that i've done that actually look BETTER than some DVD's. That's the kind of crap is being marketed.

And I don't understand how they could do such a dirty job. :x
