DVRs: A windows-based MythTV - works with WinTV-PVR

I found this when poking around. It may be of interest since it runs on windows. (i.e TMPG...-> add a KVCD module)

If you don't want to run on Linux or you need to run Windows programs on the same machine, this may be an option.

I installed myHTPC over the weekend and it works very nicely. Much better than the software that comes with the PVR.

The live TV plugin works great and the timeshifting is very good. Just need to fix up the remote control to work better the the silver one and this is a nice piece of software. Would love to try the server/client feature to see how well that would work,

Cheers,

Hi rhino,

Did you install the program guide software (XML)?
I'd like to know, so I can compare it to MythTV.
Comments?

Thanks,

Hey Kwag,

i installed xmltv as i am beta testing another pvr piece of software for the pvr250/350. I'm trying to twist the author's arm to open the testing to yous guys here as he would get great feedback. He is working on a live tv plugin but it does scheduling/recording so far.

The xml guide works very well, and there is also xmltv automate which sets up a scheduled job to update the guide every x days.

myHTPC works well. The tv plugin is good and does timeshifting very well. Only thing is its processor hungry. I have not gotten around to installing mythTV so i cannot give a comparison as yet. I'll get another hard drive sometime for that!

There seems to be regular updates on the tv plugin and you don't actually need to run it with myHTPC. It also has server/client facillity using some 3rd party software. THis is supposed to be quite good, but a buggar to setup. As yet my laptop and desktop still refuse to talk to eachother so i'll have to wait before testing that.

From what i can see from other forums, mythTV is the mutts nutts in PVR software.

I'll stick up some screen grabs later this week,

Cheers,

Hey thanks rhino :)
I installed myHTPC just for kicks, and it really works pretty damn good :!:
I also installed the Web Browser plugin and the xml guide. Works very good too.
As a matter of fact, it took me hours to set up MythTV, but less than an hour to set up myHTPC
I also see a huge activity in the HTPC forum, so it seems that this software is very promising.
I haven't done any live recordings with HTPC. I just installed it to check out the weather module, the TV guide, etc., and it all works very well.
MythTV bombs every once in a while, so I think that for more stable operation ( even though it runs on Windows :!: ), HTPC seems more streamlined.
So I'll have to do more testing

I played for a while with the timeshifting features of the tv plugin and was well impressed, I think for the sceduled recordings you can configure in safety margins, ie. start x minutes before and stop y minutes after

But as you say, there is an active myHTPC community and they are working on version 2.

I've been playing around with myHTPC. I got the XMLTV stuff working but I'm having some trouble with the time shifting and live TV. I'm not sure I understand how the plugins work since there seems to be two for WinTV (WinTV and WinTVCap)

I have the live TV stuff working great but I don't know if the time shifting works yet. In the TVGuide plugin program ID which plugin did you configure "myHTPC.EPGWinTVPlugin" or "myHTPC.EPGWinTVCAPPlugin"

Also, what did you do for playback?

rhino 01-16-2004 09:51 AM

I cannot remember how i set up the time shifting. I know i browsed the forums on myhtpc to figure out the settings.

I have since moved to us GBPVR. I'm beta testing this software for the developer. Its pretty good for something thats only about 14 weeks old.

The live-tv is shakey at the minute, but he is writing his own filter for reading and writing an mpg so that he can do good time shifting, etc.

Worth checking out,

It tried GBPVR but it crases on my Win98 system. I haven't had tme to try to figure it out yet but his site doesn't say it supports Win98 anyway.

I can't say that the developer "should" support Win98 but I bet there are a lot of people other there that have an old copy kicking around.

I wonder if it would run on NT4? (I have a spare copy of that too.)

rhino 01-16-2004 12:22 PM

I think its win2000/xp support only (NT may work in that case) but whether that limitation is forced by .NET, direct X, etc. I don't know.

Cheers,

I'll try updating the .Net stuff.

I don't blame the developer for sticking with 2K/XP, Win9x is pretty old and it would be a pain to support both platforms.
