AMD vs P4 Processors

I will probably have to purchase a portable computer (Houston) in the next couple weeks. Haven't bought one for a few years. Could someone advise concerning AMD vs P4 processors and recommend something? I run Windows XP and need 512RAM, CD r/w and 60GB or larger hard drive.

Re: AMD vs P4 Processors

OK, since I've no response on this, could someone point me to a site that contains information on processor comparisons and screen comparisons (TFT, XVGA, etc)?

I would certainly appreciate it.

Hi Nick,
I saw your 1st post but didn't reply because I don't have the slightest idea on which is best...
The same about sites that may contain comparisons on several CPUs and several screens.
I do own an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and I can't complaint about it.
But I don't know if it's better or worse than a P4 2,4Ghz.
Just so that you have a reply ;-)
Cheers buddy

I think that with laptops the biggest differences are the amount of heat produced and price. Athlon supposedly creates more heat but costs less than the Pentium version, although I'm not 100% sure about the laptop versions of the processors.

If I had to choose, I'd go for a P4 if money is no problem or the prices are almost the same. Otherwise I'd take the Athlon.

Something that might interest you - Averatec just released a tablet/notebook pc, includes a Athlon Mobile 2200, 512 mb ram, 60 gb hd, dvd-rom/cdrw drive, 4 usb 2.0 ports... just in at Costco for $1279, on sale for $1349 at the Averatec web site with $50 rebate (no rebate at Costco).

One of my coworkers just purchased one, and it's pretty neat - seems responsive, but the bottom does get a bit warm while it's on. Being able to turn the display around and use the stylus is a nice change too... and this is the lowest cost full-featured tablet computer I've seen. Screen size is a bit small (12.1" screen), but then again, the whole thing is pretty compact.

Here's the web site for the tablet computer:
