Are there any good freeware Firewall progs out there?
Hi Guys,
I wanted to know if there were any good Firewalls programs out there (apart from ZoneAlarm I hate it). Karl, recommended an excellent free Anti-Virus and I wondered if a good free Firewall prog existed to compliment it. I would appreciate any recommendations guys. :) |

If the alert rises during the night, you have all your DLs blocked until thje next morning. I'm stuck to release 2.15 that let continue the traffic and block only the faulty programm. |
I am using Sygate also
highly recommended :D |
i'm also using sygate, but i used to use zonealarm and as far i'm concerned i would also be a great choice!;)

none of these two works with winXP SP2. BE carefull.
I don't now for Kerio. |
Hi Phil :)
WinXP Pro ENG SP2 with KerioPF 4.15, here. Just did the patch for SP2 nearly 2 weeks ago and it's working like a charm. At least it was when I left home in the morning  Cheers |
Using Sygate Personal Firewall (changed 1 week ago from outpost), and works very well with W2K.
Only problem: incompatibility with Mac Afee Antivirus... (has to change to AVG) |

These are the ones that have problems : http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2 These are the ones that STOPS TO WORK ! http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242 |
I tried kerio and for some reason its not kicking in after reboot.
I might give Sygate a go and see if that one works well. |
Another vote for Sygate!
I've been using it for about 4 months with absolutely no problem. I'm also using SP2 and don't have any problem. BTW Phil, I didn’t deeply look in those links, but I couldn't find Sygate in the list. |
I switched from Zone Alarm Pro to Sygate and love it.
Much more user friendly for allowing or blocking programs. Also, switched from Norton Anti-Virus to Antivir :) Sygate and Antivir work well together  -BP |
I have Sygate on one Machine and it works great and I use Kerio's Firewall on my other machine and it is now working perfectly after a system wipe and re-install.
I use XP Pro and I think the problem was because I installed .NET framework and instead of XP loading automatically I have to keep clicking on that damn Icon with my username to load Windows XP which really annoyed me. I wont be installing .NET framework again. |
Hi all:
Any updated information on personal firewalls? Thanks Otto |
Nothing changed.
|
Thank you for your reply.
I have downloaded Sygate Personal firewall, and it appears to be working OK. Regards Otto |

Hello:
Has anyone read this article? Comments?: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-6034666.html Thanks Totonho |
Despite this a thread concerning firewalls (;)), there is nothing to say on the article : google is far from beeing the first site I use when I need to look at something. I'm a yahoo maniac since years.

If you do not use DHCP do you really need firewall ? Or should I always use a good firewall ?

It assigns an IP address to machines on a LAN. If you have a dynamic IP or a static IP, anything can attack you, and if you have open services, your security can be compromised. So always use a firewall, unless you have a NAT router at home and you're the only PC behind it. Because if there are several PCs behind the NAT router, and one has a virus that goes out over the LAN and tries to enter other machines, your security will be compromised if you don't have a (software) firewall running on your PC.
