My computer thinks my 20GB HD is only 1.95GB ?!
 

Hello, I recently installed my old 20GB HD into my computer, where I already have an 80GH HD. I am running Windows XP just like in my old pc. This is the HD's model number: IC35L020AVER07-0

Why does my computer think that is only 2GB?

How can I fix this?

I assume you have your 20GB drive as "slave" on the primary controller :?:
Change the jumper on the 20GB drive to "CS" (Cable select) and see what happens.

Well, I just checked and I do have the jumpers as CS.

Any other ideas?

Yes, change to slave.

And if that fails, change the 20GB drive to the secondary controller, and change the jumper to master.


Edit: If that fails, change the ribbon cable.
And if that fails, get another drive :razz:

And check also is there is no jump on the disk (near the one that select the mode Master/slave/CS). I do not remember the name of this jumper but IT IS used to limit the size of the disc on certain systems.

Did you check the wrong size just inside windows or in the BIOS too?

Ok, now I got a 40GB HD and my OS does recognize the real amount. Now, the problem is that I cannot delete any files that I just store there today.

I get a window saying "Cannot find the specific path. Make sure you specify the correct path." Does anybody know why?

I'm running Windows XP and the drive was empty.

Also, do you know why it is kind of noisy?

The jumpers of my original HD are in CS.

Does it matter what jumpers I use in the new HD to improve cpu speed?

Usualy your main disk or OS disk must to be jumpered to primary "master".
Your second one could be primary "slave", secondary "master" or secondary "slave". Forget CS.
Be sure in BIOS both IDE controllers are enabled.

The BIOS is the way your computer can boot ! Without this little software it is not abble to communicate with all the devices and start to work.

You can access it when you switch on the PC, on the very first screen, by pressing F1 or DEL (it depends on the BIOS brand).

Ok, now I got a 40GB HD and my computer did recognize it, and also the original size.

1) But now, the new HD makes these weird and annoying noises when the computer boots up or when I try to use it.

2) Also whenever I save something in it, it just takes forever and when I deleted the computer gives me the disk size as if the stuff was still there.

3) I tried to format it and it says that it can't because something is displaying the contents of this drive, and every window is closed.

Please anyone help me, this is driving me crazy. 8O

Spyware / Addware / Virus...
(or maybe antivirus doing a permanent scan of your HD).
