That is a WiFI phone, so you need an access point to connect, and then it will "register" with your VoIP provider.
Just get any wireless access point/router, and hook it up to your broadband connection, and you're set :!:
For example, I have a free account with voipuser.org. It's free to call almost anywhere in the world, but calls are limited, I believe to 10 minutes per call max.
But that's just perfect for when I'm out in the road, close to free access points, because I don't have to use my cellular phone (which costs me), and instead, I use my WiFI phone :D
Basically once you connect to any free (open) access point, then you can call anywhere you want via your provider.
Go ahead, and open a free account at www.voipuser.org
I think you have to wait a couple of days after registering, in order to start making calls. They do that to control abuse.
They give you a DID number (in UK), so people can actually call you there.
Then, you can visit IPKall ( www.ipkall.com ) and open a free account, which will give you a free telephone number in the USA.
Then what you do is you forward calls to that number to your SIP account at voipuser.org, and then you can give out your two telphone numbers to your friends ;)
They can call you at your UK number, or at your USA number.

argentina (Landline) 1 1.16
argentina (Mobile) 13 15.08
Copy pasted from SIPDiscount's call rates page.
Apparently Argentina is not free at all.
Free destinations will display Free as with Portugal or Spain, like this:
Quote:

portugal (Landline) SuperDeal! free free
...
spain (Landline) free free
What you could do is you could place one minute free calls to Argentina, but instead of using your account you would have to use the User: test Passw: test account.
Cheers

Does the handset negotiate itself the router connection or is there a way to set up it?
Sorry, but i don't know nothing about this.

You set up the WiFi phone phone just like you would set up a PC/MAC, etc. for wireless access.
That is, you set the phone with your Access Point's information, such as SSID, WEP key, etc., and the phone automatically locks to the signal of your access point. When that happens, and it gets an IP addresss, DNS servers, gateway, etc., it then connects and "registers" with the provider you have programmed into the phone. This can be any SIP provider of your choice.

Kwag:

Do you know if this WIFI phone can work with a WiFi access point that requires you to "log on"?

I use a local account that doesn't have any WEP encryption, but requires you to log on through a Web browser before you can use the connection.

I guess it would need to have some sort of web browser built in to be able to do that?

Thanks!

Hi Icarus,

There's an option in the phone called "Web Authentication", so I guess if you can get the URI address to log on, from a regular PC browser, and then feed that line to the phone it should work.
I know what you mean. That's called a "captive portal".
Check the UTStarcom F1000 PDF manual at http://www.utstar.com/Solutions/Handsets/WiFi/
But I haven't tried that yet :!: :)

Kwag:

I may take the plunge and purchase this phon. From your own personal experience, how bulky is it to carry around? I can't get a good feel for the size of it from the picture. Can it easily fit in your pocket?

Thanks!

It's as light or lighter than a regular cellular phone :D

You bet ;)
But I carry my cellular phone in my pocket, and my WiFi in a cellular case in my belt, because I value my WiFi more than my cellular phone

@Kwag: Sorry, im lost.

Im signed with sipdiscount. It can't give me and inbound number in spain (and it seems that they only give inbound numbers in the country that you register from). I buyed some credits and i can do calls from my softphone.
I have not a sip number but a user name.

Im signed with voipuser but they give me this message "We currently are unable to provision new numbers (sip number?), please subscribe to this thread to be notified when new signups are accepted again."
I obtained from voipuser an inbound phone number.

Im wanted to sign up with ip call but i have not (that i think) a sip number.

I want to buy the F1000G handset.

Please advise me what i need to do viewing the previous theatre.
Thanks.

@Kwag: Please read http://www.voipsupply.com/product_in...roducts_id=802 and advise me about headset, charger (is it not bundled?), guarantee and tech support (i think that i must to pay it to you, ;) )

kwag 02-15-2006 09:46 AM

Hi Luis,

That's basically the same phone I have, except that the one shown is a newer model and now has 802.11G :)
That's a great buy!
The standard wall charger is included (the one you plug into an outlet, and the other end of the cable plugs under the phone), and as for a headset, you can use any headset that you use with a cellular phone.
There's an optional desktop charger, but I never bought it.

And about extra guarantee and support (extra charged)?
Also you missed my other previous question.

I didn't buy the extra warranty. So I have one year manufacturer's warranty only.

You mean about acquiring a local VoIP number :?:
Well, for example in the US, some companies (Vonage, etc.) do give incoming VoIP numbers.
But then here in Puerto Rico, there are still no VoIP providers that give local DID numbers (because of Phone company monopoly bullshit).
So you're going to have to search in detail to see if there's any provider in your are that will do that.

No, sorry. I mean, with the situation explained in http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=123925#123925 , how to configure my handset to receive inbound calls.

Have you tried calling your sipdiscount number from another SIP phone, like this: yourUserName@sip1.sipdiscount.com
Because if that works, then you CAN sign up at ipKall, and forward calls to that address :)
If you can't test it, PM me your username, and I'll try calling you from FWD (FreeWorldDialup)

@Kwag: Hi, how are you, so many time.

Im extremely busy and tired nowadays so I cant participate all that it like me do it.
No I have another question.
I buyed the Comtrend CT-536+ Wireless ADSL2+ Router and the Startcom also.
Once installed the my softphone didn't connect with the server anymore, so, I think it is a ports issue.
Could you help me in that way?
What ports do I need to open?
Do I need to assign a not dinamic ip to my startcom and redirect the ports to that ip?
How could I keep the phone functionality in my PC and my startcom at same time?

In other sense, could I set a server for outgoing calls and another for incoming calls in the startcom? How? Is there some hint?

Thank you

kwag 04-25-2006 09:24 PM

Hi Luis,

Long time no see :D
Check that your NAT router is not blocking any "outgoing" port, and your softphone should connect to any outside provider.
It seems you're getting port 5060 blocked somehow.

@Kwag: Please, could you answer all my previous questions.

I have a sipdiscount account, only outgoing calls, not incoming.
I have a sipgate account, it allows incoming calls.
Can I set both service providers in the starcom?
Could you say me step by step the starcom config settings with both (if allowed) or only with sipdiscount.

Thanks in advance.

Change the settings accordingly to your provider/account settings.
