M0n0wall - Beta version 1.3b1 released (FreeBSD 6.x)

Finally!
M0n0wall, based on FreeBSD 6.2 :D

Code:

12/16/2006 - Beta version 1.3b1 released
The first FreeBSD 6.x-based beta version is finally out and makes the improvements between FreeBSD 4.11 and 6.2-RC1 available to m0n0wall users (much better support for wireless NICs and hardware in general, running m0n0wall from USB memory sticks, etc.).

Great news Karl! :D
Have you already tested it?

kwag 12-17-2006 03:04 PM

Not yet Rui :)
I'm pretty spoiled with my WRT54G running "Tomato" firmware

You see, I get these kind of statistics with it:

Bandwidth:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif
Quality of Service graphs:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif

Look at more screenshots and "Flash" presentations here:
http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato/

And all of that in 2.7MB of firmware

Hmmm, Karl buddy I'm afraid I don't quite understand those readings.
I mean, I don't even know how much bandwidth you're getting on your current wi-fi connection (*cough*) I mean DSL connection.
And then the bottom graph.
I really don't know what to make of it.
I mean it must be good otherwise you wouldn't be posting it but I'd like to understand it so that I can compare it with mine.
Can you help me understand it better?
Cheers :)

Ok :)
The top graph shows the bandwidth on a 5 hour windows.
The bottom pie charts shows bandwidth consumption per class. That is, the percentage allocated to different services, like VoIP.
In my case, I have VoIP set to "Highest", so when anyone picks up a phone at home, you would see the "Highest" segment on the pie chart the largest piece.
Like this:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif

Compare that to the previous pie chart (the bottom one), and you'll see on the color chart where the "Highest" is the largest piece on the pie. That's while I was on the phone.
So basically "Tomato" (the firmware  ) dynamically allocates bandwidth to services, and I can even be running file sharing apps and what not, and voice sessions are not choppy or interrupted :)
Also Tomato does layer 7 (L7) filtering, so you can "class" just about any program without knowing what ports it uses. Sort of like Snort's stateful packet inspection.
This is a VERY powerful feature of this firmware.
Say I want to run Bittorrent, but I'm not sure if anyone on another machine in a LAN has it set up to use non-standard ports.
I would do this:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif
And that puts anyone on a low priority bucket, regardless of what port they are trying to use ;)

Read more about it here: http://l7-filter.sourceforge.net/ :D

Hmmm, layer 7 huh?
Neat stuff in a such a small fw.
I wish I could find some hardware like that here in Portugal.
I think they only sell the latest versions that don't support Tomato, etc...
Nevertheless I will investigate about it.
Cheers

The current version at the stores is 6 and/or 7.
At least here.
Your best bet is probably  eBay.
BTW, here's a link to the "Tomato" firmware discussion forum: http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/fo...play.php?f=160

Hey Karl/guys,
Don't have much time now.
Just to let you all know that I've tried it (m0n0 1.3b1) during this week.
Just a small issue with the snmp traps sent to m0n0mon.
Other than that works wonderful.
A whooooooole lot faster than pfSense-embedded images.
IMHO pfS should only be used with PCs and m0n0wall should be used with small SBCs like Soekris or WRAP.
Will let you know more by Mon/Tue.
Cheers

Hi Rui,

Did you set up some QoS on it :?:
If so, how does it work :)

rds_correia 12-24-2006 07:27 AM

Not yet.
I'm leaving that for next week.
I'll let you know because in order to test it I'll give you a call.
Coming to think of it I forgot how many hours differ from Portugal to PR.
Is it 4? or maybe 5?
I don't wanna catch you still in bed .
Cheers :P

^^

No phone call because I'm waiting on them to credit my sipdiscount account after I "donated" another 10€...
It's been almost a week after I've done so and a couple of emails sent and nothing from them yet.
I'm getting itchy here.
If they don't get in touch soon I'll send them my lawyers' new years goodwill message, what do ya think?

Oh and M0n0 Beta has just gone 1.3b2.
Most interesting facts are:
* enabled NAT-T support for IPsec VPN (enable via webGUI)
* enabled hostap for wireless cards supported by the ral(4) driver

Uau! Ralink drivers with HostAP enabled!
Can you imagine the speed those babies can achieve?
Theoretical 540Mb within 30ft :o.
Cheers
