New distribution for Embedded, Firewalls, etc. - SeedLinux

Hello everyone,

This is my treat to all of you, who would like to use a minimal Linux (And Solid!) distribution :D
I have created (actually "cooked") an rPath distribution, which I named "SeedLinux".
You can download the ISO image here: http://www.rpath.org/rbuilder/project/seedlinux/

Why did I do this :?:
Well, most Linux distros are very bloated, with a few exceptions like DSL and Puppy Linux.
But I wanted something that is solid, specially with the advanced package management "Conary" system, and naturally the choice was rPath Builder.
So I created (actually specified with Builder) this small and "Bare Bones" distro, so anyone can build on top of it, whatever you may want. It can be used as the basis for firewalls, gateways, and even Desktops, by just adding a "Trove" of your choice via Internet (similar to apt-get, RPM, etc.)
So, enjoy :D

BTW, I will now change my Ubunto Server Wireless Gateway to SeedLinux , because it consumes WAY less resources ;)

Want to know what Builder is :?: Go here: http://www.rpath.com/corp/products/w...-rbuilder.html

And check rPath site here: http://www.rpath.com/rbuilder/

I Karl :D.
I'm beginning to worry about you speaking about Linux all the time .
Gotta take you to doctor Beastie http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif and have him run some tests on you
Cheers

Hi Rui,

Yep. I feel very sad about the BSDs on some things, specially on the desktop.
Linux is WAY ahead of the game on the desktop, and I fear that BSDs just won't catch :(
Anyway, I still prefer BSDs for heavy duty server work ANY TIME over any Linux distro :)
But the sad truth is that for a Workstation with all the bells and whistles, Linux is just too far ahead.
And now that Dell has announced official shipping of machines pre-installed with Ubuntu, I can see this spreading very quickly!
So I think that this  http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif is really the other way around :D

Cheers!,

PD: BTW, I still
hate the GPL (but not the LGPL) with a passion ;)

UPDATE:

I'm about to trash my Ububtu server setup (the one I use as a wireless gateway), because OpenBSD 4.1 wireless support is WAY better than Linux :!:
It just so happened that I was experimenting with OpenBSD on an old notebook, and after I installed OpenBSD 4.1, I can now work with several USB and PCMCIA wireless devices that I have laying around, and NONE of them work "out-of-the-box" with Ubuntu (6.06 LTS or 7.04), but they DO work with OpenBSD.
I'll report more on this once I cut over to my new gateway.

Rui,
After all, you might be right, that I needed a quick visit to Dr. Beastie

It was just a thought buddy .
At the end of the day, you're right: I'm afraid BSD will never get to the desktop PCs with all the bells and whistles that you can find in Linux simply because we're talking about radically different communities and ways of thinking.
Send all my best to "you know who", everybody back at home :).
Regards
