The return of BeOS
 

If anyone remembers this operating system, which to me, was years more advanced than Linux, MacOS X or Windoze XP, you might want to look at this: http://open-beos.sf.net
Yep, that's right. It will be released ( hopefully ) next year, compatible with all current BeOS applications. Their next phase will be to improve beyond where Be, Inc left it. If you want to blow your mind, check this out: http://crux.sourceforge.net/nuke/index.php and download the BeOS MAX Edition, which is a distribution of the last kernel that was made, together with a lot of open sourced binaries and applications. It's 100% legal, as it's a distribution based on the BeOS Free Personal Edition. But they souped it up, and added so many features, that it's actually better than the BeOS 5 Professional 8O . If you are wondering that maybe this system is dead, look again: http://www.bebits.com and look at the software releases including DVD Rippers, MP3 players, MPEG encoders, etc, etc 8) :lol: Looks line 2003 is going to be a good year :wink:
Also, take a look at http://www.beosradio.com and listen to some good ( and some awfully bad ) music, and every half hour and on the hour news about things going on in the BeOS world. I am running the hell out of BeOS on a Celeron 1.2Ghz machine right now, and it runs faster than Windows XP or 2000 on my Pentium 4 @1.6Ghz 8O . That's the kind of performance it provides.

Go here: http://www.bebits.com/app/3089 and download BeOS MAX Edition V2. Forget about downloading the free BeOS PE 5, you won't regret it :D
You have a built in web server and ftp server. And it will be much faster than Linux, specially on a P200. At the bottom of the link I gave you, you'll find links to the forum, FAQ's and how to burn the image, etc.
What the team at Open-Beos on SourceForge is doing, is replacing the propietary BeOS parts with Open Source components. That's scheduled for next year. Already, they released the Be File system ( beta3 ) replacement. So this project is moving right along. Actually, there are three other groups doing the same thing, so in the long run we'll have more than one distribution of BeOS. Probably with different names, but all with the same goal, which is full compatibility with the original BeOS.

I tried the DVDRip ( http://www.bebits.com/app/3118 , screenshot here: http://beos.titer.org/dvdrip/DVDRip-0.1.png ) and it WORKS!. Slow as hell!, but it did rip my DVD to the hard disk. Now I only need to play more with this stuff 8)

I'm in the same boat- I have a Pentium 2 200 mhz system in the other room and I was about to format the hd and load up XP so now that I read this thread I'm glad I didn't :) I'm going to load BeOS and play around with it.

I already used BeOS Personal Edition P5 (or something like this!) on an old Pentium MMX at 200Mhz without problems... Its an cool OS, but limited! But with all these new version...!!!!!!!! :)

If this version can support an ATI Rage Mobility (the video card on my laptop), i will download it!

I already downloaded BeOS Personal Edition P5 and installed it on my laptop, but an OS in black & white is not interesting to use! But with the drivers, i think it will be cool to use! :P

If there are no drivers for your specific notebook video card, look in your desktop for a folder named "Other Drivers". Double click on it, and you'll find a file named "VesaAccepted-1.1.zip". Double click on that, and decompress it. Now, you'll have a directory created called "VesaAccepted". Go into that directory and click on the file VESA_Accepted.exe and select the resolution you want. Now save and reboot from that program after you make the changes. You'll be running in full color after you reboot ;)
I have my Compaq Notebook running at 1024X768 in 16 bit colors with this drivers, and it blows the crap out of WinXP 8O . It's a Pentium III 800Mhz. It runs rings around Windows :)

I have been using this now as my main OS for the past couple of weeks, and it ROCKS!

The BeOS is back!, and now being open souce ( MIT licensed ), it's going to take off like a rocket!

Hello, this is very interesting. But many questions come to mind, what do you do for hardware installation software? What kind of software works with it? avisynth can be installed?. I tried to find these on the faq of the official web but wasnt there

Not sure about avisynth. But go here and look for some software available: www.bebits.com and www.haikuware.com
Remember that Haiku is still very young, in the sense of comparing it to mainstream OS's.
Still, main goal of the "Final" version of Haiku is to be 100% compatible with BeOS, so by then, all BeOS programs should run on it.

That thing runs radio station automation, and it has been doing that on BeOS for over 11 years!
I believe than TuneTracker now runs on Haiku (I read somewhere), so that's the kind of apps you can expect to see on Haiku :D
