More than four IDE devices?

hi all...

does anyone know how I can run more than 4 IDE devices on my machine? I currently have 2 hard discs, which both don't support RAID (my mainboard does, so there is also IDE3 and IDE4 slots on it...). Whenever I try to put my DVD Burner on IDE 3 or 4 it won't recognise it... The problem is that on IDE 2 I have my DVD Reading Drive and my CD Burner... Anyone knows how to solve this?

hi friend Jellygoose... :)
more than 4?.....yes,i use 5. 8O
is hard to explain(my poor english),but i try:

IDE 1
one maxtor 60gb 7200rpm - master
one maxtor 40gb - slave.
this two hard drives are fixed(internal).

IDE 2 :
1 LG dvd player - master
1 cdr-w (acer 24x10x40) - slave
i put one key to on-off the power of this two players(+12v and +5v)

and another hd fujitsu 10gb in a removable box(*) in IDE 2
(slave or master,don't mather)
(*)removable box = with the hd under one compartment(my poor english)

and the cable in IDE 2 with this 3 devices seems like:

X1-----------------------X2-------------X3-------------X4 (this is the "cable")

X1 = motherboard ( IDE 2 )
X2 = LG dvd player
X3 = hd fujitsu
x4 = cdr-w

very important:
when i put the box on the pc,i turn off the dvd player and the cdr-w

confused? :?
but works...and you can put another one device
with another removable box. ( and you get 6 !) 8O

ps:

you turn on the players only when you want to use them.
if you don't need to use the players,power off them and free power,temperature,etc.
and with this configuration the 2 players
are bootable at the same time too!
8) eletronic is cool!

editing:
now is correct!

very important:
ever turn off the pc when in or out the removable box
and/or
turn on-off the players.!!!

wow jorel thanks! :lol:
now i'm a little bit confused... listen: I have my 2 hard disks both on IDE1, and my CD Burner + DVD Reader on IDE2 ( master and slave... )
now in my BIOS, I can only see 4 devices ( 2 from IDE1 and 2 from IDE2)... I don't even know how to activate my 3rd and 4th IDE Slot... sorry for being a pain in the rear buddy :)

you are correct, :D
my mistake! 8O

in ide 1 = 2 devices
in ide 2 = 2 devices (3 in my case)
i go to edit and correct my last post now! :wink:

Suggestions: Get a USB 2.0 card and now you can have 4 devices ( 2 on each IDE channel ) and 4 or 5 external USB 2.0 hard drives. USB 2.0 is 480Mbps, faster than FireWire (400Mbps ).

I currently have:

Drive C: 60GB IDE HDD
Drive D: IDE CD-R/RW Writer Plextor 12/10/32A
Drive E: IDE DVD-RAM/DVD-R Reader/Writer
Drive F: 18GB Cheetah Wide SCSI 10,000RPM HDD
Drive J: External USB 2.0 40GB (Generic enclosure with a Samsung IDE HDD drive)
Drive K: External USB 2.0 60GB Maxtor IDE HDD
Drive L: External USB 2.0 120GB Maxtor IDE HDD

And I still have some USB 2.0 slots available :wink:

hay all.

how about me. I haven't installed me CenDyne (DVR-105) as of yet.
I'm happy I finally went out and splurged (long story that I'll spare you
for now, on) I was gonna do this over the weekend, but I got tied up w/
my Delphi endeavors and a couple of PC issues that came up as well.
I have BJ's 5pk @ $13.99 DVDRW's for starters so I can test this baby.
And, no, I'm not giving up on my CDR's either - - just expanding my
options, that's all.. oh, and looking to the future.

My main pc here is:
* 20g
* 30g
* CDRW
* DVD-ROM (pionear 10x or less)

My 2nd pc is:
* 60g ( partitioned as: C: 900mb D: 2g E: 54g )
* CDRW

I haven't decided on which PC to hook, and start my DVD happy burning
yeah. But, i'm confused, cause I like using my main pc for most quick
things, but my 2nd pc is pretty empty though, but that I would have to
get up (or turn around in my chair) and tend to it. I don't know.

Then, I have to know if I can burn DVDR/RW undre Windows 98 (not SE)
I'm not looking to author up the hill, but I would like to see this baby out
in any case. I don't feel like buy XP or anyother for that matter either.
So, I'm not sure if I'll have problems yet w/ software under W98.

Any advise, would be welcomed guys.
Thanks a bunch.

Hi vhelp,

My advice: Get rid of 98 as fast as you can :D
It's a HUGE stability difference from Win98 to WinXP. My machine is up for days, and not hours, as it was the case with 98 :x ( daily crashes and restarts ) :wink:

kinda funny

USB 2.0 is faster than firewire, though only on paper I think.

Everytime I see a device (like a ext hard drive) reviewed in Comp. shopper or PC magazine that has both interfaces, it preforms faster using the firewire interface....

Just my 2 cents...

That's true :lol:
I haven't done any benchmarks, but people have told me lately that doing benchmarks, FireWire kicks USB-2.0 butt :lol:
Not to mention that FireWire 800 just came out 8O

Just wanned to add:

you can also purchase an add-in IDE card, with or without RAID. Then you can have another 4 more! :!:

Your hard discs don't have to be "RAID compatible". Any IDE disc should work. Have you tried plugging one of your HD's into IDE3 or 4 on the motherboard?

My current setup:

IDE1 (mobo) -
Master: "Old" Seagate 10Gb disk, boot drive and a bit slow with it ;)
Slave: OLD Ricoh 6x4x24x CDR/W (still useful for stuff; not picked up by new ATA card)
Both on a standard crappy IDE cable because they're not storming.

IDE2 (mobo) - disabled to free up an IRQ

IDE3 (new ATA card) -
Master: Middle aged :) 40gb Seagate
Slave: New LG DVD/CDRW combo drive, barely picked up by card. Maybe the reason for everything being slow... but nowhere else to put it.
Both connected on a ATA133 80 wire cable.

IDE4 (new ATA card, smartly sharing IRQ with IDE3) -
Master: Spanking new 180gb IBM drive, running far too slow despite an ATA133 card and cable :roll:
Slave: nothing.. to try and keep bandwidth up to its current meagre level. (and power usage down, only got a 300w)

So that's five drives, all running off IDE, none of them specifically RAID, in a standard PC, with room for one more (hmm, resurrect the internal Zip100?)

Didn't take much messing to get working either, though you do need some bare technical/system building and BIOS configure knowledge. Once the motherboard IDE2 was disabled, the windows drivers were installed, and everything was connected with *functioning* cables ( :evil: ) it was a doddle and all auto-detected.

And to think I only bought it to get a full 180gb capacity. Sweet.

Get a scsi card as well and a sub station in the back garden to par everything!

I'm still a big fan of SCSI devices, just chain them up and away you go.

Cheers,

That is for sure :!: 'the blue screen of death' is a thing of the past with XP- occasionally programs 'stop responding' but you just <ctrl+alt+delete>/end task instead of reboot.

do you know it?
i'm plugged for 2 days 8O
using power dvd,zoomplayerPro,
sound forge versions: 4.5, 5 and 6(for differents plugins)
tons of audio plugins(maxbass,vocoder,ultramaximizer....tons more)
m$ xl and word,MovieStacker,ToK,
TMPGEnc(258,259,2510,2511),
vdub,dvd2svcd(3 versions)
HeadAC3he,BeSweet,BeSweetGUI,wmplayer9,
wmplayer6.4,flashget,nticdmaker6,nero,
T-Racks,normalizegui,fitcd,
vcool,microsoft global ime(chinese),
winrar,cce encoder,procoder...
and 9 pages are open now(internet) 8O
and nothing give the "blue screen".
is stable ,soft and really faster.
believe me :
the 98lite Professional 3.0 have less then 500kb zipped
and do miracles. :wink:
and can be used in Windows Millenium too!
just a little from the read-me:
"98lite gives you the option to get things back in shape and really
take advantage of some of the truly new (less visable) technology
Microsoft is offering in Windows Me."
