DDR won't work on my K7S5A

I got an Elite Group K7S5A mainboard that supports SDRAM\DDR
i got on 256MB/100Mhz of SDRAM on it, and i remove to upgrade
with a 512MB\266Mhz DDR, but the them thing would boot with
the new memory, now i look through the manual and i didn't see
anything about Jumper pins, and yes the FSB is 266MHZ.
So does anybody has an idea whats goin on hear :?:
here is the motherboad http://www.ecsusa.com/products/k7s5a_pro.html

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

vhelp 06-14-2003 07:55 AM

yippy, some-one else w/ my same board :)

I mean..

@ ovg64...
I have that same MB (TWO of them in fact) and I too, also upgraded the
ram (my MAIN pc) from 266 DDR to w/ 2nd one (total 512MB)

All I can tell you, is that you don't have to do anything to your MB. You
just pop in the chips and turn power back on, and boot up w/ 512MB ram !

Chips...
my RAM banks are PC2100.. are yours ??

Remarks...
I got mine at BJ's for $36. I might get another bank of 256 DDR for m6
2nd PC setup. As, that's my main Capture pc (both, dv and analog)

ovg64 06-14-2003 10:39 AM

@ Boulder,
I set my Bios with the default settings, but no it when
pass my mind about reseting the CMOS jumper n i already
return the ram :(

@ Vhelp
yes, its a decent board good performance 4 the cost, however
the only down side is only a 266MHz FSB then again i got it when
the Athlon xp CPU came out.
Now my question to you, is worth putting a 512 DDR on it since
Tmpeg task can be a bit heavy. n i asume you put in PC2100 because
the board could'nt handle PC2700.

@ ovg64..

No, the sales man told me all you would need is the PC2100 only. It was
the way he told me! But, his prices were too steep, and I walked. a few
week later, I found the same chips at BJ's, but for HALF the price !!

TMPG encoding...
As far as I can tell, there is less HD swapping of video data, because there
is more RAM to stuff and also, less HD SWAP file to play with. But, still..,
the more complicated your scripts and video encoding and also your video
codec used, the harder TMPG has to work, hence your HD activities.

I got the extra ram (NOT for speed, but) for less HD activities in TMPG. I
thought it would help to fill it up as much as possible.

Also, when dealing w/ video editing applications (or even vdub) you have
less hd actitivy going on, because more RAM can be fed data, before it
resorts to HD space.

Also, I want it for the Capturing side. I want to try some experiment w/
changing my SWAP file size and seeing if that will help w/ doing even more
reduction in my Analog capturing of frame drops, cause the more RAM you
have, the less HD actitivy. Mind you, I have TWO ESC K7S5A boards. And,
I drop frames on my XP 1700+ MAIN pc, while on my XP 1800+ 2nd pc,
I drop zero frames (in most cases) and at 720x480 capturing.

So, my main reason for adding more RAM in my case, is for the capturing
w/ lesser frame drop.. plus other reason stated above.

That's it thus far.

ovg64 06-14-2003 11:32 AM

Yes, i Know it would'nt make much difference in speed, but for the reason
that you stated above and also it would be a lot easier on multiple task.
Now my question about the ram higher speed PC 2700 it was cause
some one told me that it would matter that it will automatically work
at the lower speed of the PC 2100 since the board is a 266mhz FSB.
and in a future upgrade is good to have higher Ram.

yep, same here....two of the ecs's 5A...and when i went ddr, all
i had to do was install the new 1-stick of 512 ddr, and whammO....nicer speeds,
plus i added a new video card, 32mb,,,and what a difference....

I picked up another K7S5A board too...but a Pro this time, for the
USB 2.0..

Well thats the thing you guys upgraded from same DDR,
But i was upgrading from SDRAM to DDR which make since
in having to reset the CMOS in the board.

dood,
sorry, i forgot to mention it...

i too went from 192mb of sdram to 1 x 512mb of ddr 266....
and had no probs...i think the first time it wouldnt boot {i did check to make sure i had it properly seated} but it was a bad stick, then tried the second one [kingston] and it worked on either slot...

Ov,
i tend to stay away from the really really cheapie, third party, generic stuff,, Transcend makes decent ram, Kingston is good, Corsair, OCZ...etc

The next pc i modd will definetely be watercooled...
They sell cases already rigged for watercooling or 'kits' as well and theyre coming down in price. Some kits can go for as low as $ 109.00 u.s.d.

External Kits...

Hey zooter,

Don't forget to buy some "flood" insurance
btw, nice mods 8)
(Looks almost like my car engine  )

Them looks like zooter is building some kind of race car there;
you better make sure one of does lines does'nt pop off otherwise
you going to have hell of a shotcircuit.

el_mero_zooter 06-17-2003 02:55 PM

more like a tricked out lowrider.... 8)

the thing with watercooling is that just like with rubbers...
all it takes is one leak and you're screwed....

 :D

ZtR

i'm looking at my sd card for the rest of the pix to post,,
it's almost like we would almost need a space to post them in,,
ya know kinda like a kvcd-Modd's page, or a kvcd'er's Modds forum or something to that effect...covering air cooling, watercooling, overclocking for keeping-it-kool while kvcd'ing...
hint hint,,,
