New Machine is Getting Way Too Hot !!
Hi there...
I just hope that I can get a little advise here from one of the cooling Gurus! I just got a new CPU today (Athlon XP 2700+ T-Bred 333mhz fsb) and it works fine actually... However it gets WAY to hot!! together with the CPU I got a Thermaltake Cooler (TR2-M3 www.tr2tt.com) and it's said to work up to XP 3400+ so I thought it was a good idea! However idle temperature goes up to 58 degrees Celsius! 8O You can imagine how that baby burns when cooking a KVCD... Any ideas? I also have a case vent... :( |
Are you reading the internal diode or the motherboard temp :?:
What motherboard do you have :?: |
which side is the case vent?
and is it blowin in or blow'n out? ztr |
However internal XP diode or not, if it would be the value brought by the internal diode it could be more than 15c different to the socket temp.
And 58 @ Idle is hot! And it seems that you had no problems before when using your old CPU. This 2700+ runs with vcore set to 1,65v and the "Verlustwärme" of this CPU is about 80watts this shouldn't rise the temperature like that, even if you used a 1700+ running with 1,5vcore before your new CPU. Did you change something refering to the voltages in the Bios? It seems you use a hybrid heatsink incl. a 80mm cooler, its like the coppersilent heatsink I had before. And in your case that you're not overclocking it should be good enough. I heard about such problems often at Teccentral.de and the problems where often solved by re-mounting the heatsink. So the big Question is....: Did you also change something else beside your new CPU & Heatsink? What thermalcompound did you put on your cpu dye? Too much? The less you use the better the result is. |
Ok, Thanks a lot for your interest...
@krassi: I have an Epox EP-8K3A+ board with the newest BIOS (just flashed it yesterday)... I read the temperature from the BIOS (PC Health Status), and it goes up to 58 degrees right after startup... @zooter: The case vent is on the back of the case, trying to blow the hot air out. It's a small 40mm vent, which I just put in there. (it used to cool down my old Pentium 1. ) @incredible: Right, Had no problems before with my XP 1800+ and my Coolermaster Vent. However it only had 166mhz FSB and my new one has 333MHZ FSB. Notice that it is no Barton but a T-Bred, and I think I read somewhere that they get noticably hotter compared to the Bartons. I didn't change anything in BIOS, it still runs 1,65 VCore. However I had to adjust the multiplier, because my board thought it was a 2100+... Quote:

I've already been in contact with the manufacturer and they said that they add more than 15 degrees to prevent overclocking  The internal diode isn't read right with this mobo. You can test the heat of the copper with your hands, mine isn't getting hand-warm... |
Sorry for my lack of knowledge...
What is the internal diode? Is that the temperature displayed in the bios? |

The internal diode reads the processor heat "in" the processor. There are some recommondations on amd.com where you can find the max temp. for the interal diode. If i remember well its between 80-90 degree celsius. So your idle temp would be ok if your reading that internal diode. You can use Motherboard Monitor to show both temps. |
Where can I get that program?

There you can also find a ini-file for this mobo. But be careful at the beginning, don't let it autostart with windows. I had a serious problem with that once  |
Ok, it got MBM too, but anyway your CPU is running too hot.
Espacially using your mobo! Reinstall the heatsink, use less thermalcompound! I have a 1800+ DLT3c JIUHB and its running 2530mhz real by using 1,85vcore (Overclocking is also my hobby as you can imagine ;-) )... and even with these Settings the Socket temp didn't went over 45c Idle .... using that mentioned coppersilent (modded by an enermax 80mm fan), ok, now I got a complete ZERN Watercooling and it doesn't go over 41c (socket) @ load and on the 8rda+ (well on mine, cause I tested it) that means exactly 52c core temp. Yours will be different, cause of a different chipset (Via) ... but shouldn't be that much more different. So your hardware itself seems to be ok. I assume the Problem comes of the way you installed it. :? The logic is very simple: Because BEFORE when using the old CPU, the degrees where read using the same WAY. And thats why I said there won't be such a rise of "Verlustwärme" in Watts by using this new CPU. Maybe 0,15volts more vcore (if you had a CPU @ 1,5vcore!) but that means mabye a rise of 4-6c @ Idle And Krassi is right, IF your mobos revision delivers to MBM the core Temp. (choose the right sensor in the setup!) than you can feel secure whats really going on there inside the CPU! PS: Bartons don't get that more hot, cause the more heat they produce will be compensated by the bigger dye which stays in contact with the heatsink. |
Hi everybody!
Thanks again for your support about this issue... well I never had anything to do with overclocking yet, so all your help is much appreciated! I downloaded MBM 5.0 and installed the program! However I need some help about how to get information about the current temperatures from it! When I click on "System Information" I get this: Code:
-----------MBM---------- Thanks again for all your help! P.S: Should a case vent on the back be blowing hot air out of the case or sucking cold air in? |

Jell,
i'm using vcool! is special for athlons, very easy to use and free! have "alarm" and some good features. http://vcool.occludo.net/ if the link don't work, try later cos sometimes is hard to open . my cpu (athlon xp+ 2000) now: 29 and mb 25 :!: |
Here you also can find a MBM config guide.
http://www.teccentral.de/artikel/artikel_178.html But by "lowering" your CPUs intensity using software like Vcool this will not solve your "hardware" problem .... thats all I can say ... so the problem should be attacked in the "Core". :!:  As we say in german "Der Sache auf den *Grund* gehen und nicht frickeln" :D Vcool is intended to lower the temps even if everything is installed correctly ... as I think it is in Jorel's case. |
