BEOS Versions and Video Encoding

Hiho...
I got my eyes on BeOS again...

Do you have any experiences with the current BeOS Versions floating around on the net...

ATM I'm downloading "BeOS5PE MAX Edition"

Are there any mpeg1/2/4 encoders available for BeOS?

As a Multimedia OS it should really kick some butt in encoding speed :D

Hi Razorblade2000,

If you want to keep up to date on what's available, and all the new software still being released, look here: http://www.bebits.com/
As for BeOS PE (Personal Edition), you should actually get this:
http://www.beosmax.org/main.php
It's BeOS on life support
Actually, it still runs circles around every Windoze distro, and even all Linux distros.
And look at all the software that is still being developed :D
Hopefully some day OpenBeOS will be released, and continue the tradition.
There are many MANY people still running BeOS ( I still run mine every once in a while :!: )

I installed it once on my Compaq Presario Pentium III @800Mhz, and it flies.
So on that machine, it must be a rocket

Damn... I was able to install, but it won't boot up a desktop... the screen simply blackens out and stays this way :(

Press "Shift" when booting, and you'll get several VGA options. Once in, you can install the optional display drivers. Check their forum, because I don't remember in what subdirectory the optional drivers are.

Updating this thread.

BeOS is back as Haiku!

Go check it out: http://www.haiku-os.org

What's the point about using an alternate OS ?
I mean, what is important are the applications. Is it like all those Mac addicts... who run Windows app ?

kwag 10-19-2009 09:14 AM

Hi Phil,

At the current development pace of Haiku, I think their goal, which is a full desktop OS, will be met in less than a year.
Already there's an updated VLC, handbrake, etc., and because the OS is cohersive in all aspects of design, it should take over Linux on the desktop. (At least for me, it already has!)
Already Python 2.6 is in there too!, so most of my daily development is now on Haiku :)
The speed is awesome, although it's still not fully optimized.
Boot time is about 12 seconds from splash to full desktop, something Linux, Mac or Windows can't do.
Not to mention the BFS is journaled, so you can pull the plug on the machine as many times as you want without data corruption.
The first Alpha release looks more like a BETA release :!:

Only when I want to watch some Flash or weird Codec movies, I'll boot into OSX for that
Which I have to do anyway, say for watching Fox, because the Codec they use (Move Player) only works on Mac and Windows, so Linux is out of the question.
