TMPGEnc: Using KVCD Templates with TMPGEnc Xpress 3?

Hello,

I just got TMPGEnc Xpress 3 and I am trying to figure out how to load in the KVCD templates. I so far haven't figured out a way. Can someone explain to me how this is done?

Thanks,

Doofuss

Hi,

I think you can't use the 'old' templates with tmpgenc Xpress 3.0, as they have different file format.

You have to manually configure it, but you'll find the matrix file in the tmpgenc 3.0 thread.

If you don't know how to do that, I could post a mini manual with that options, but it's very easy if you well know the old version.

Yes, a mini manual would be helpful

Thank you Fabrice a mini manual would be helpful. I like the new program and clean interface, but couldn't live without the KVCD templates. Now that I have discovered VCD I just love them.

Check this thread:

http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11129

Be aware that it's in portuguese, use babel.altavista.com or google to translate.

yeah, i found the kvcd templates for tmpgenc 3.0 xpress...

but please, create the kdvd 720x480...

and don't say version 3 is same speed as version 2.51..............i really loves the interface of version 3...+ my dvb files open directly in version 3.0 and not in version 2.521.

thanks in advance.

Sop why don't you do the template yourself ?
If you are so in love with the interface, finding the way to change the resolution to the one you need shouldn't be so difficult. Is it ?

And in love or not, tmpgenc is still slow ;-)

@slingky,

The only thing you have to patch is the matrix.
All other settings are user defined.
As a matter of fact, today, I just removed the link on our main page that pointed to TMPGEnc templates.
You can use any encoder that you want, as long as it supports customized parameters, such as the ones we use here.
So the "illusion" that KVCD is only about TMPGEnc templates, should be now be very clear, that KVCD is NOT about templates :!:
Read here: http://www.kvcd.net/portal/articles.php?lng=en&pg=20
Also, you should start to read about mencoder. The future is pretty clear as to what encoder will be our choice. It's just a matter of (a little) time ;)

my preferred encoder was Mainconcept...

but i need deinterlace and the deinterlaced of mainconcept didn't have the possibility to keep each frame and so double the frame rate to keep fluidity...

so i checked version 3.0 of tmpgenc and it was very ok...

so now i have 2 choices;

a) create dvd files with tmpgenc or mainconcept then author the dvd then dvd-shrink it

b) use the kdvd params to create smaller files then author the dvd

i want best quality but not just 2 hours per dvd !

Then you've come to the right place :D
I'm fitting 3 movies on average on each DVD-R, using KVCD techniques.
You can put around 5 hours at 704x480 without telling the difference from the original ( from pristine sources, of course).
At 352x480, you should be able to put close to 10 hours, with a VERY good quality, even when watched on a HDTV.
Have fun

but the problem is without templates, how do i configure the other params ?

i put the matrix in tmpgenc xpress 3.0 but which options i must take to have 6 hours on a dvd 4.7 ???

vbr, cq, ? please help....

i tried cq-vbr (max. 3000, min. 300, cq 90) but i get 842mb for 40 min.)

so only ~3.5 hours per dvd !

give me more tips.

thanks again.

Even with old tmpgenc (and old templates) you can't just encode "blindly" at a fixed CQ. The CQ must be determined for each source according to the final file size you want.

So your problem is not template related. It is in the understanding of the KDVD process.

Go look for "CQMatic" section on this forum.

slingky 06-08-2004 09:13 AM

cqmatic is not compatible with tmpgenc 3.0

but i took calcumatic... and it's pretty clear i need like ~ 1500 kbps to achieve 6 hours per DVD...

but my question is what min, max for 1500 avg vbr ???

and if i use vbr-cq, what cq is preferred usually ?
(i know that depends the source but....my source is dvb 704x480 avg 2500 kbps)

i encode 704x480 and not 720x480...that play fine in my xbox...

oh, i forgot to say that i use the deinterlace (double framerate) of tmpgenc so does this mean i will be able to put like half the minutes on the same dvd...so maybe i'm at max for quality now ???

I understand all your questions but I would like you do a little search by your own : DL the former template, open it into a text editor and read it ! All the information you need are there.

BTW, to be honest, 6h won't be in DVD-like quality. 4H is a maximum. With 1500 as avg you wan't have the same quality for sure.

NONE :!:

Depend on the source means : length, A/R, contrasts, slow/high action scenes, BW or colors, movie or cartoon...
In other words it does not depend on the technical aspect but of the artistic content of the video.

lol. not at all :-)
Actually interlaced movies, due to their poor compatibility with MPEG2 algorythm which is delta-frame based, needs 20% MORE bit to be encoded than deinterlaced ones.

@ Dialhot

i appreciate a lot your replying...

i downloaded the file KDVD-720x480-Full-D1-_NTSC_.mcf

and read it...but there seems to be lot of GOP settings depending on min. bitrate ...i'm confused...+ in the file, there is a lot different vbr, cq settings and they seems to be like min 2 000 000, max 8 000 000, avg 7 000 000.... so i don't understand how to get 4 hours with that....

my last try was; vbr: min 300, avg 2200, max 3000
and i think i will get 4 hours with that like you suggested

my gop settings are 1,5,2

so is it ok or do i make a mistake ?
(like for gop maybe 1,7,2)

thanks
Maxime

Forget this part that is used only for the wizard as it's indicated in the first line.
Real parameters starts after all this, in the last third of the file in fact.

You should increase max to 4500 is you are doing 704x...

I don't have this in mind but it should be the same settings in the last tmpgenc version so just find them in the template (after the part I said you to not consider)

I copied this into the browser http://roothost.webcindario.com to get the new templates, but I keep getting this address. Can someone help me out here?
