KVCD: KVCDx3 doesn't fit on one CD?
 

Hey Kwag, I did a little test with too not so great movies to determine approx file size of the movies with KVCDx3

I used the new planet of the Apes Remake DVD.

I did 2 test. CQ_VBR @ 20 and 12. Here are the results:

Planet of the Apes 20: 1,262,407 kb
Planet of the Apes 12: 865,076 kb

As you can see, it looks like kvcdx3 with CQ_VBR @ 20 would be a good choice for 2 cd encode. I noticed almost NO DIFFERENCE :lol: :lol: :lol: in quality from the original on the 20 encode.

12 is a different story. I noticed very few more blocks and what I saw wouldn't be noticable on a tv anyways. But the filesize difference wasn't worth going lower. You'd still have to have 2 cds after audio was added.

I just tried to do Six String Samurai with KVCDx3 cq-vbr20 and it came out just over a gig.

I'm really looking for a 1 CD solution so I didn't try to burn it, but I did burn a test at the same setting earlier and it looked very good.

Going to try KVCDx2 1 CD now.

KVCDx3 will give approx. 60-65 minutes per CD with the default settings.
That's about it. With CQ setting set to 20, it should give about 50% more space. It was not made to fit a movie on a single CD. Unless your material is in the range specified.

Here's my first result on the encode with kvcdx3 and 117 min movie.
Art of War. Disk 1 of 2 (haven't done the second disk yet)
CQ changed to 25 because 30 was putting it way over.
80260 sectors.
Encode 55:47 of the movie.
File size 826,888 mb.
I'm encoding the second half with about the same amount of sectors and hopefully bring it in under 830mb. I can overburn at 830 but not any higher. I also cut off the first few seconds and the credits.

Results of second disk:
82387 sectors, 57:16 length 779,265mb. 25 CQ. Even though the second disk had more sectors and the length was longer the file size was smaller, this was probably due to less action in the second half.

Six String Samurai is a 90 minute film and at cd_vbr20 it came out at over a gig.

If you are using the KVCDx3 template you will only get 55-65 minutes per disk. If you want Six String Samurai to fit try the 352x480 kvcd plus.

By the way, I've found if you do not use FitCd the file sizes will be much larger.

I did use FitCD.

I'm now trying the KVCDx2 704x480 1 CD template settings and using DVD2SVCD. The CQ has been calculated at 48.64 by DVD2SVCD.

I've got about 8hrs left before I can take a look at it.

That's because the 2 blocks TV overscan that FitCD is adding. It makes a total of 32 vertical black lines + 32 horizontal black lines. This way the encoder has less image to deal with, and it leads to a smaller file size.
You can use this TV overscan with all templates. It will bring the file size down beautifully. :wink:

I saw just one bad point with it... as you are resizing to a smaller size and adding black borders, your widescreen movie will have a shorter vertical sight.

One option for that would be crop these 16 lines around the image before you add the borders. I believe this way you will be overlapping the black borders with the movie, and not adding them.

Well, that is just a thought. I didn’t try it yet... may be tonight.

i am using x3 with CQ 12. Gives me 7MB/min. for wide-screen. can't see quality change in sony 27" tv.

I've done 20, but not 12 :D Anyway, great! :lol:
