noise from the VHS tape caused the encoder to need more bitrate?

Hi, Here are my experiences. I could be wrong, so please correct them if necessary.

I captured from vhs tapes and the highest I can put in CD is 75mins (815MB with overburn) by using KVCD template with setup 352x240, CQ=74, 1,12,3. Seem to me all people are ripping from DVD movie and be able to pack 120mins in a CD. Because the noises from the VHS tape caused the encoder used more spaces????

For some reasons, If I captured at 352x480 the results is not good as captured at 640x480 even I increased CQ=78 the result is about the same, just using more spaces.

I am using virtualdub program to do capturing. I am using the default setup. Just wondering any features in the program I need to turn on in order to archive the result like ripping a DVD in order helping the encoder program generate a better quality??

Sorry for a long story

Anyone had the same stories please shares or I am doing something wrong with my setup. :?

Hi Learner,

I ran into this exact same problem and I don't know the answer but am very eager to find out more about this. Were there's a will (or a filter) there's a way! 75 min was about was I was getting when encoding at 352 x 240 and capturing at DVD quality. I had audio sync problems when I cap. at 352 x 480

thnx
