fixing bad telecine job?

hey guys. I've got an AVI file with framerate of 29.97. Looking at it frame by frame, I see 3 progressive frames followed by 2 blended frames (not interlaced). This leads me to believe the source is actually 23.976 fps but someone has done a bad telecining job -- am I correct? Is there any way to fix this, to get rid of those blended frames and restore the 23.976 fps original?

Try SelectRangeEvery if you are sure of the pattern or MultiDecimate if not.
See in the documentation of avisynth 2.55 (it is on your PC, in the "doc" directory of avisynth).

The original field structure is gone so there's no way to fix that without the result being jerky or full of blends and ghosting.

Thanks boulder, I think I'll just stick with encoding at 29.97 fps. I tried SelectRangeEvery as Dialhot suggested to delete the 2 blended frames out of every 5 frames. The result looked good, i.e. no more ghosting, but then I'd have to speed up the audio a lot to compensate for the lost frames and I think the result would have sounded like Mikey Mouse. Thanks for the help tho guys.

Why not use pulldown for video :?:

Dialhot 07-16-2004 12:48 PM

Because pulldown and telecine are two different things.

Pulldown : 23.976progressive -> 29.970interlaced
Telecine : 23.976progressive -> 29.970progressive

stephanV 07-16-2004 12:59 PM

3:2 pulldown = telecining

as boulder said, the field information is destroyed so pulldown removal (IVTC) isnt really an option anymore. keeping it 29.97 is the only logical to do.

"This process, where studios add additional frames to the picture in order to increase the framerate, is called telecine."

http://www.zerocut.com/tech/pulldown.html
"During the telecine process, twelve (12) fields are added to each 24 frames of film (12 fields = 6 frames) so the same images that made up 24 frames of film then comprise 30 frames of video

3:2 pulldown is "a way to telecine" that gives a INTERLACED results (work on fields) where what is commonly called telecine produces progressive (work on frames). But you still like to play on the words, I have other things to do than restart this kind of game.

Note: here we do not know if the xvid is interlaced or not so we can be in front of either one of the situations.

EDIT Sorry, here the source is progressive, so DEFINITELY not pulled-down.

its not wordgames... and since when does afterdawn count as source? thats the most crappy discription of telecine ive ever seen.

telecining for NTSC is always done by using 2:3/3:2 pulldown. trying to go from 24 progressive to 30 progressive is a. useless (for pcs) or b. idiotic (for TVs)

the common definition for telecine IS pulldown (2:3 pulldown removal is a synonym to IVTC) or in a wider sence preparing a movie (24 fps progressive) for TV (PAL or NTSC)

Dialhot 07-16-2004 01:51 PM

You're right.

I know. But when he will cut "bad" frames, rest of it set as 23.976 and add pulldown, then his audio won't be MM-like. Video might be not fluent, but maybe this will satisfy J-Wo.
