TMPGEnc: Playback issues
 

I don't know if this is a TMPEG encoder problem or not, but It seems like any MPEG-1 or 2 file that I make, has an issue when I play them back on my PC.

Whenever I load them up in any media player, I can't skip to any location in the movie using the position bar. It will show an image of that position of the movie, and the timer will continue to count forward, but the picture doesn't move at all, and no sound. It only seems to do this with MPEG files.

Any suggestions?

It's a matter of KVCD, and probably due to non standard GOP. This give big problems to splitter that lead to two kinds of problems:

- false displayed time
or
- very long seek (ff and rew).

I rather to have a correct displayed time some I use the Ligos splitter (and the Ligos mpeg decoder) taht has no problem with that but like you, each time I jump to a location, the image is frozen for some time. But generally this restart after some seconds (sometimes a minute) ! This is the time for the splitter to find again its marks into the streams.

The problem is actually related to VBR MPEG-1. Not really a KVCD issue.
Specially WMP doesn't like VBR MPEG-1, no matter what GOP size is used.

Karl, this happens also with MPEG2 kvcd but not with SVCD.

Note: the problem is not only with WMP but with all players. I don't remember if VLC has this also, but I guess it doesnt as it uses its own splitters and codecs.

I normally use Zoom Player, but this issue also rears its ugly head in WMP as well. If I do my encodes with a closed GOP, will it work a little better? And if so, does it mess any the quality of my encodes?

Don't worry with the playback on your PC ! Or change the spliiter you use. But your DVD are to be read on a SPA,don't they ?

Any suggestions on a good splitter?

I remember that if you use anything from elencard, the seek is okay but you will never know if your video time is okay because the time displayed will be completly false.

Else try to play with VLC, perhaps all is okay with it.

I just did a prediction test of Napoleon Dynamite.

Screen Ratio is 1.85:1, 480x480 Resolution, 1 CD, 128k Audio.

Now here's the weird part.

CQ - 71.4043579101562 - Closed GOP

CQ - 79.9689636230469 - Non-Closed GOP

That's quite a difference. (Especially in the 70 range, that's where the magic happens :) )

With last CQMatic, doing only one prediction for each case is not enougth t ohave a good idea.

If you want to compare, do 3 predictions in a raw for each cases and comapre the averages.
