The clips are phase shifted. You can see it easily by using Bob(), which shows that both fields are identical. Use Telecide(order=1) right after loading the source and process and encode as progressive. You'll save a nice amount of bits

Thank you so much Boulder for taking the time to help me out with this project I really appreciate your imput.

As a noob I don't really fully understand Interlaced sources, so thank you for the Bob() tip and taking the time to look at the clip.

Now I can progress with conversion.

Thanks to you all guys for all your help. :)

By the way, you should check some indoor shots to make sure they are not truly interlaced. BBC has sometimes produced hybrid material, for example, Monty Python's Flying Circus contains both film (the outdoor shots) and video (the indoor shots). There's also the series based on James Herriot's books which had the same combination, I just don't remember the title right now.

Would it be ok in that hybrid material to encode the whole as interlaced?

Yes, actually it is a must.

Here's a link to the doom 9 guide about checking interlacing using dvd2avi (use dgindex instead):

Hi cweb,

Thanks to the link for that guide, I shall check it out and see what else I can learn. :)

Hi cweb,

I just read that guide and found it very interesting, I like the method here also for finding out if my PAL source is Interlaced or Progressive.

Thanks again.

I don't want to be rude but there is nothing new in this guide.
At least it summurize things for newbies that can't read all the posts on both forums.

That guide has nothing to do with determining such things. DVD2AVI/DGIndex will only tell you how the stream is flagged and that must not be used to distinguish progressive and interlaced.

Thanks for the info, as im no expert in such things I just thought it might be a good alternative method but on seeing you have just written I know now it is not to be trusted to properly tell Progressive from Interlaced.

With regard to Interlaced source I sometimes find it confusing that is why I appreciate having the benefit of the knowledge from you guys who are helping me to get to grips with it. :)

I know the guides are old or just for 'beginners' yet I myself keep refreshing my memory by rereading them from time to time.

Here's another one for when you have to ivtc:
http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm
Though the use of telecide is out of date ie it should be Telecide(post=0,order=1) for DVD sources.
The above guide also includes some writing by Donald Graft (neuron2 - the author of decomb/dgindex etc).
