Multiple pc video encoding?

Does somebody know something about multi pc video encoding.
I have read something about a time ago, here, but I can't find it.
BTW, search engine is really hard to work with, or it is only my seem?

My major at school was Unix design but my two minors were "digital picture editing" and "massive parallel computing". That was 15 years ago but I can tell you that mpeg1 and mpeg2 algorythm aren't good candidates for multi node encoding (either multi-cpu board or grid computing).

Now things have perhaps changed since then...

Hi,

Havr a look at dvd::rip. It's for unix, allow coding of mpeg-1, mpeg-2 and avi (with ffmpeg codec), and used in clients/server tipology (called cluster mode), it only encode to avi... Could do the trick using the ffmpeg codec...

You have it there: http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/doc/cluster.cipp

Read too that Sony vega 5 does have this feature...

On the other hand, you can use the TCPDeliver feature of avisynth to decode with avisynth on a PC, and encode on another one.

DVD Rebuilder can be used on an encoding "farm". I don't know any details, but there's a thread about it at doom9.

This point is different.
DVDRebuilder encodes each cell separately, as if you had several small mpegs to encode. Then it is not stupid to send each job on a different PC and have them all compiling a different cell together, and finally rebuild the disc.

That's an interresting idea. But I wonder how they can do that (I think this is not with the current release of DVDRebuilder).

It seems it can. Some like a plugin.

Hey, that's great. Thanks for the link.
(tell me if you try it before I find a DVD to backup)

Nice find Pro, very interesting reading. Excellent to cut down encoding time by encoding over your home network with multipal PC's. Very interesting indeed. :)

Yes it is. When I have a little bit of time, I'll try it.
Also I am thinking about doing something like that, but with a VPN.
I would like to know if somebody here would like to test that too.
It is to say, a distributed video encoding farm through the whole world.

I have a problem with my personal network : when I copy a file at full speed (100 Mbit/s), that uses 30% of my PCU load. I figure taht this is because my netcard do not have DMA and use IRQ to access to the memory.
Does anybody have the same problem ?
This is very annoying to try to encode something distributed other the network :(

@Dialhot

Hi Phil,

The thing annoys me with my home network is I get a lot of collision when transferring files across my network. I was thinking of switching from a hub to a switch as I read that they are better as the switch acts as if the PC's are connect directly like a cross over cable.

Is it worth me ditching my hub in favour of an 8 port Switch?
