I don't know if you heard about this app.
This is a unified GUI for ffmpeg, mencoder, mplayer, x264 and ffmpeg2theora.

It it delivered with a windows compiled version of each tool !
For those who want to taste new flavours (x264, theora...)

I think that finally we will change to another format in a future.
Do you know (all) how near is that future?
Do you know what is most probably that format?
Can, today, any format, duplicate all DVD features?
Can any SAP play it?
